we don't know what the kid did. one would assume it was something fairly serious to warrant such chasing (probably more than just running a stop sign or something dumb like that)

kid didn't deserve to die, but it's a hazard that's assumed when running from the police. there used to be a day and age when police were respected, back when resisting arrest could warrant shots being fired. nowadays, nobody listens to the police. police chases are dangerous, surprise. if you don't want the danger, don't engage in one.

it's like someone going on safari where there's lions. if that guy is unfortunate enough to get mauled by a lion do we blame the lion for anything? or is it the guys fault for putting himself in inherent danger.

and going along with ridiculous hypotheticals, what if a motorist clipped a bicyclist (not killing but sending them down and causing injury). a policeman saw and started chasing the car. in trying to get away, the car slams into a telephone pole, the driver is ejected, and in the roadway the policeman hits him with his car on accident. should the cop have not given pursuit in the first place to prevent this wrongful death

This happened in my town...right in front of a music venue.

So whats the scoop? did the guy deserve to die? was it in your opinion a true accident?

sarcasm. tight. i'm not saying the kid deserved it. but if he didn't break the law then he wouldn't have been in that situation. and is running a stop sign all he did? if so, then he should've stopped. he didn't.

That came out wrong, I didn't mean the guy in the video didn't stop at a stop sign, I was just using it as an example of what might make a cop kill someone for no good reason, here in Philly we had a cop shoot a guy right in the head because the cop "thought" the suspect was going for a gun, there was no gun, the guy was a known drug dealer but it doesn't change the fact that there was no gun, people forget that police are not above the law, and they can't just shoot a person because they think the person has a gun, and even if the person has a gun the police are not supposed to use deadly force unless they think that they or someone else is in mortal danger, long story short they have to abide by the rules just like everyone else, or thats what they want us to think anyways.

rustybrown 03-04-10 12:32 AM

It's a sketchy part of town, for sure, with drugs/prostitution. The kid was chased down for allegedly trespassing in a construction site. Could have been taking a shortcut...could have been scoping it out for tools or lumber.

Maybe the cop just wanted to harass him for not having bike lights. Maybe just for riding a bike...happens a lot around here after dark. "Terry stop" BS.

Mistakes were made on both sides. The kid for bolting---later accused of having a gun in his pocket---no drugs or cash on him. The cop for shooting a taser out of a moving vehicle, then losing control of his cruiser and dragging Steen under his car.

Though mistakes were made, he definitely did not deserve to be run over and dragged for non compliance.

i agree with rustybrown that mistakes were definitely made on both sides, and i definitely agree with lupinIII that the kid totally didn't deserve to die, but goddammit quit ****ing running from the police. it only leads to more trouble. i sat on a jury where a guy was trying to sue 3 police officers for breaking his jaw. regardless of whether or not it was police brutality, if he had complied with the officer who stopped him, he would have been busted for marijuana sales. instead, he got busted for that, resisting arrest, assaulting an officer, and a broken jaw.

ruban 03-04-10 01:43 AM

arent there regulations for cops? why would you chase someone thats on a bike, from your car? theyre not allowed to chase motorcyclists for this same reason. it just leads to accidents like these. stick a baton through the wheel worst case senario. cop made a stupid mistake. and that kids an idiot for not stopping.

Don't flatter yourself. I guess I didn't realize that you have a giant chip on your shoulder, and that you have never been wrong before.

That's just as tragic as the guy at Subway having to deal with flashbacks about making cheese sandwiches.

Poor cop my ass, who goes into the job thinking they're just going to pet puppies all day and help ducklings cross the road?

You're missing the point, just because someone goes into law enforcement knowing full well that the job is difficult and lives are at risk it doesn't make the man impervious to feeling bad for taking the life of a teenager. Everyone assumes cops are these huge monsters out to get their jollies off by beating up on minorities. The ones you know about that did that are the ones reported about in the media. No one heard of this officer's commendations but we're all discussing this tragic accident, that's how it works and there isn't a single person on here that would be ok with being judged strictly for their mistakes.

Hate cops all you want but I know full well that if your life was in danger they are the ones you would call first so drop the tough-guy hypocritical statements about FU*$ the police! and be real for once.

I agree with 99% of what you posted 'cept for this part,"Everyone assumes cops are these huge monsters out to get their jollies off by beating up on minorities." I know for a fact that a lot of them do.

You're the only person that's ever referred to me as any sort of redneck. But we've already determined that you've been mistaken before.

Go run some stop signs.

ilikebikes 03-04-10 12:51 PM

maybe I'm the only one that had the balls to call it, maybe I'm wrong, but one thing I can tell you for sure is this, "we" didn't determine anything, I pointed out to you that I have indeed been wrong in the past, you were the one that keeps insisting that I havn't admitted being wrong in the past, heres what you posted ^^^^ just in case you forget again. ;0)

Since when does attempting to insult a stranger over the internet imply that you have balls?

I didn't attempt to insult you, but if you were insulted its on you, just like your attempted insults are on me. :thumb: and while I have you here why don't you reply to the rest of the post? remember this part?

Well he should feel bad, for making poor choices and killing somebody. But that's not my point. Nobody was twisting his arm into becoming a cop, or twisting his arm and making him run over kids. It's ultimately all up to him, so why worry if he has to deal the psychological consequences of the decisions he has made?
I don't feel bad for the guy who drives the septic tank pump truck either, even though I know he deals with a lot of **** too.
