It really doesn't look to me like the aluminum wheel fared any better than the carbon fork.
but the carbon fork fared much worse than the steel fork in the picture originally above it. steel is stronger that CF, that's the point that was being made.

Don't care for them, but don't hate them. I think they look really bad ass on some bikes, it works well on OP's bike, but other times it looks like crap. I wouldn't ride one though, they're just not for me.

I wouldn't say one fork is stronger than the other from the photos just because one snapped. They're both ****ed, but steel is malleable and CF isn't.

The rim is bent, yes, but the wheel maintained an approximately round shape with the hub in the middle of it, it didn't shatter. To be honest, I really didn't care what the fork was, on that photo - the fork broke in spite of being (supposedly) a more solid piece of equipment, than a, laced wheel. Chances are an aluminum fork would have broken or bent very considerably, too. The photo is not a carbon vs. steel statement, it's about laced wheels surviving serious impacts.

one material will bend, while the other will brake. malleable or not, that's strength to me.

thats a hard point to make, considering the wheel didn't survive. its a total loss, the hub might still be good, but thats about it.

You know what? I can agree with that. The wheel should be thrown away, sure. It's still a tough piece of equipment. When I had my "big accident", the frame was bent, even the rails on the seat, but the front wheel didn't even suffer a roundness deformation - I laced it myself, trued it right and never had to true it again. Barely had to true it after the accident (which I was only able to do after my both arms healed, both shattered, including my zygomal bone - it was full frontal brutality).

We don't even know the force of impact that bent the steel and snapped the carbon

I wish I had more money for some really kick-ass wheels that I could act snobby about. But I don't. So I'm rockin' a mis-matched low-rent DA22 and Velocity Deep V combo. At least I can get the ugly stickers off my DA22 - maybe I'll do that tonight.

but that's not the point. one material literally has a "bend but not brake quality" to it, while the other will just outright fail. the force one can place upon a given material before it's compromised is not the question, but how that material reacts. Regardless of how much abuse it can take, I'd rather have a fork capable of bending before breaking, than a fork that will just snap.

and, just because you gave me one, here's one back

We had a little midwest get together for some polo in Chicago this last weekend and one of the Minneapolis players had two "prototype" aerospoke wheels, for polo.
They had thick plastic covers over the wheels.
I really don't know what to say about the whole thing, I dont think I'd like to play on one of those but, it didnt break in 2 days of pretty rough play, and it makes a great sound when a ballnails it.
