so, finally finished: the 'last' piece in my 'one of every material' road stable...ti, carbon, steel are now joined by this beer can bike.
i started riding seriously in the late 80s, when oversized aluminum was positively abusive (had one of those 3.0 cannondales with the cantilevered dropouts and 20mm tires @ 130psi!). as a result, i've actively avoided it. but i have a thing for the over-engineered and this frameset came up...very clean, exactly the right long'n'low size for me (52x55) and just a couple hundred dollars (w/OEM carbon fork). i had to bite, right? CNCed 'barrels' for BB shell and head tube (w/integrated cable guides), paint over anodization...totally OCD build. ~$1200 new in '05, i'm told...a taiwanese principia, in essence.
my parts bin already held the centaur century and the deda post, so i just had to pick up the matching bar/stem (*loving* the deda 'rhm' bar contour). i'd planned to go 'budget' sram, but the right deals happened and i ended up with red levers and force derailleurs (cosmetics, perfect...bonus!). wheels are 'wide' alloys w/25mm open corsas (that measure 27!). the complete package ended up a bit heavier than expected @ 17.4lbs, but it sure feels light on the road...
after a couple hundred miles, i can say that this is a straight-up race bike...quick handling and STIFF. the wide rims really suit it, in that the low pressure/high volume damps the ride quite a bit and the frame is well-suited to take advantage of the extra grip (even if i am not). beefy frame tubes and tires look, well, beefy. for sure it *goes*.

I recently just got a new CAAD10... It feels like each ride gets better and better. I sized down with this frame after about 3300 miles on a 55cm, I'm now down to a 54cm. Every ride I felt like my bike was slightly too large, and went with my gut feeling to size down. I guess it's all down to personal preference.
I don't have a sw8 customized ride at 17.4 pounds like dookie has, just a bone stock caad10 5 at 19.5 pounds.

80's Schwinn Tempo
got it for $150, added a new seat, bar tape, tires & had the rims trued, so it cost me about 240 all said and done.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Picked up this Giant Iguana in nos shape this past week and only had to slap on some less knobby tyres to make this my pdx ”beater”... I do not think it was ever ridden.

Bicycle Repair Man !!!
Will keep the Cinelli stem and bar and just have to build up the 600 hubs to some new rims and perhaps change the superbe headset to a 600 headset. I swapped in a 600 aero post after these pictures were taken.
The bike is an absolute rocket.

Just took her on her maiden voyage. Just 12 miles, but having not gone on any real rides for almost a month, getting in an accident and being sick for last week, it was a relatively hard 12 miles. Really looking forward to riding this bike more.

Here's my new beater / bad weather / lockup bike,a 1989 Schwinn Sprint frameset built up with near-random parts.
I also have a Wald basket, just waiting on the right mounting hardware kit to arrive. And if this bike survives the winter and proves to be worth keeping, it will get a rattle-can and splatter paint job next year.
