It was really cool before, even cooler now that I know it's handbuilt. I'm looking to build a frame this summer, I'm working for a sculptor who works with Oxy/Acetylene and brazes his stuff, so I have that part of the infrastructure- did you order the tubes and lugs from somewhere? I'd love to pick your brain about this.

One thing though, on strictly aesthetic grounds- move your shifters up so you can actually use the drops. If you're careful enough, you can reuse the tape. Or switch to compact drops.

I was guilty of this myself:

Before:

After:

(my "new" position is a little high, conventional wisdom says to take a straight edge and put it on the part of the drop that's flat and the tip of the lever will touch that straight edge.)

mikeetow - The Ritchey is sweet beyond description.

Took out my touring bike tonight to test her new boots which feel more like running shoes... 26 by 1.25 Avocet Cross tyres that I picked up at the LBS at a deep discount as they are new old stock that had been pulled out of their storage and consider these to be some of the best tyres ever made.

Been using it as basically a heavier, more comfortable, single speed bike. handles the road so well though. feels like steel

?

the 10-sp shimano and the original group (shimano 600 ax) on my bike above both work(ed) flawlessly.
def. requires less maintenance than STI style shifters.

Downtube shifters are dead easy to set up and adjust once you know what you're doing, even if you're mixing and matching 5-7 speed derailers, cassettes, and shifters.

How I get to work:

I will say I have another wheelset on the bike from this photo though. Same wheels, no decals, black spokes.

+1 Play with limit screws and cable tension and you should be able to have it shifting smooth in no time. Switch to friction shifting for even less of a hassle (gotta be more conscious of the levers while riding though).

If you are willing to get the frame coldset to 130mm, shimano has DA 7900 DT shifters, so you could go with a 10 speed setup for it.

Edit: Frame is aluminum, may not happen.

Updated with gears, basket, and cheap saddle:

The basket mount isn't very sturdy, it might get replaced with a Wald. Also, the chain has lost a link since the photos.
