Best bag for under 100?

whats a good messenger bag under 100?

muckymucky 03-29-10 11:56 AM

used to be the chrome kremlin for $99 but lol they stopped selling bags that cheap ;D

oh actually: http://www.chromebagsstore.com/backd...-shoulder.html $99
but um... thats the super tiny one~ i mean it works if you just want something small but theres a reason i carry the massive kremlin.

kringle 03-29-10 11:58 AM

Jandd or Banjo Brothers

MaxSta 03-29-10 12:29 PM

Chrome is crap

Manhattan Portage makes AWESOME bags, and they are all very cheap.

seagull black bag medium is $105 and its pretty big. i love mine.

lostarchitect 03-29-10 01:24 PM

I don't know if it's the best or not, but I have a Timbuk2 classic messenger which cost $100.

Pros: it's durable and waterproof and big.
Cons: not a huge amount of interior pockets for organizing stuff.

Overall I think it's a good bag. I recommend it if you don't have a ton of small stuff to organize.

muckymucky 03-29-10 01:40 PM

chrome for:

functionality~
i.e. the quick release buckle so you dont have to unstrap over your head
i.e. the padded shoulder pad for comfort
i.e. the velcro straps on the shoulder strap, strong enough to carry U Locks
i.e. the stablization strap that buckles into the should strap
i.e. the secret pocket for wallet on sizes above metro
i.e. the quick release D rings for quick tightening or quick loosening of the shoulder strap
i.e. the waterproofability of the outside AND the inside
i.e. the superbe craftsmanship
i.e. the awesome design
i.e. the reflective straps that dangle off the front buckles for safe night riding
i.e. the extendable straps that can allow you to lug around an entire wheel on your back

all facts.
if you couldnt tell: super satisfied customer.

I disagree. I've had a Mini-Metro for three or four years now, and other than being dirtier, it is without blemish or flaw. I've carried wheels, a 63cm frame and fork, a Delta Michelangelo bike rack, and various other boxes and awkward items.

Plus, the things mucky lists.

Chrome is good stuff, trendy/popular or not.

QFMFT
Even the lighter colored bags stay bright and clean for very long lol

Haven't actually picked one up yet, but if their bags are as good as their riding gear/suits (which I do own), they are top-notch.

Noir Lethal 03-29-10 02:57 PM

Just avoid the north face base camp bags at all costs, there very difficult to open/close and their small.

MaxSta 03-29-10 03:31 PM

Just compare the prices: http://www.chromebagsstore.com/bags/messenger-bags.html

http://www.manhattanportage.com/catalog/Messenger-Bags

Pretty similar bags, but MP is 1/2 the price.

hairnet 03-29-10 03:41 PM

I really like the big padded shoulder strap on the Chromes. I've only had a Timbuk II before, hated it.

Since Chromes are expensive I'd get one off the Backdoor Sale. I got large high-vis. bag for $100

ThisJauntyGent 03-29-10 04:09 PM

How do you guys feel about the stabilizer straps? It seems like a lot of these custom bags don't include them.

Are they necessary?

outty 03-29-10 04:23 PM

Stabilizer is necessary! You don't want your bag flopping around when you're making a turn.

sooprvylyn 03-29-10 04:26 PM

I scored one from Nashbar a 6+ years ago for like $30 that is still cranking along no problems. Cant recall the brand offhand. Too bad they stopped selling them or I'd get another.

shubonker 03-29-10 04:45 PM

I used to carry a timbuk2 medium messenger bag but it started giving me shoulder pains with heavy loads after about a year of use... The bag is still in perfect condition except its really dirty. Now i use a North face bookbag with a bottle holder mesh on the side. Makes so much more sense since i'm not a messenger.

+1. works out to $117 w/ shipping. Been using mine for a few weeks now and love it.

turtle jesus 03-29-10 06:01 PM

hmmmmmm well i got this husky in my pocket and its burning me :o so what does anyone have to say on timbuk2?

redfb 03-29-10 07:26 PM

i don't know if it's messenger bags in general or what but i have a timbuk2. If i carry my books and clothes my shoulder is hurting as well as my lower back. I want to try out their backpacks though.

potatorider 03-29-10 07:39 PM

Good links

Been using my DaKine duffel bag, but it's time for a change. Thanks for the good user feedback!

WoundedKnee 03-29-10 08:06 PM

Trust me, I can tell from the way they are made that you would definitely want Chrome over MP for messenger bags.. although I just purchased their Ballistic Backpack for $100 flat and it's sweet, it's what I'm wearing in my avatar.

The guy from Leif Labs has good taste too.

EDIT: Plus MP outsources to Thailand now if you care about that sort of thing.

exactly why I stopped using mine for cycling. I could never get it in a good position that didn't make my lower back ache after short while
