My new project *pics*
 

Hey this is Nate, and this is my first post here on the forums.

I'm quite into bikes...I have an older Marin hardtail that I like to ride on the central coast here in california...I also have a cruiser that gets plenty of road time around our community.

I always admired the looks, and performance of the fixie community, but until a friend stopped by on his bike, never took on a project.

One thing lead to another, and I was browsing craigslist with my buddy searching for parts..etc.

I found a local kid who wanted to sell off a project that he had started, but never completed.

I have a few parts to show, but am unaware of their maker or year of manufacturing...anyone have any ideas? Here are a few pictures of what I have to start with....

That frame looks cool, Cept for the corrosion.

I figured it was mostly surface rusting...I plan on doing some wire-wheel work on the frame to see how deep it really is. I've also been reading up on painting/primer techniques. It seems that there is a primer that seals in the surface rust...hopefully this will work?

Those looks like old Schwinn parts.

right on...i've read about problems with fixies that utilize a semi-vertical dropout frame. hmm...hope it will still work.

i just google imaged some photos of "vintage schwinn roadbike," and came up with what looks like my frame design. needo.

will this frame be a good candidate for a fixie?

Chainstay looks dented on the outside.

Chainstay is fine. Frame is fine for a fixie conversion.

Oxalic acid, found in Savogran Wood Bleach, sold at Home Depot, will get rid of that rust. You'll need a kiddie pool or large enough tub to soak the whole frame in a solution of the oxalic acid. Removes rust from chrome parts, too. When the rust is gone, rinse very, very well then dry the frame with paper towels then wipe down with an alcohol soaked towel to make sure it's really dry. Prime the frame asap to prevent flash rusting.

The best part about the oxalic acid solution is that it will remove rust from inside the tubing. There's a spray called Framesaver that you use to coat the inside of the tubes to prevent rusting there.

oh ****. I noticed this awhile ago, but dismissed it as identical indents on the inside of the chainstay. if this is damaged...are there any ways to get around it or fix it?

It's supposed to be that way to provide clearance for the inside ring(s) of a roadie crankset.

Time to hit up a hardware store for another wire wheel for my dremel.

Progress! (the opposite of congress :thumb:)

I used a combination of steel wool, an old camo pair of hunting gloves, a wire wheel for the coordless drill, and the fantastic abilities of the dremel and wire wheels. All remaining paint and gunk is now cleaned of the frame.

The dremel was the perfect tool to get around the frame lugging, and the drill helped with the sections of wider tubing.

A side note: When a particular bike frame painting guide recommends using a face mask and safety glasses while wire wheeling the frame...PLEASE heed their advice. My eyes are burning like satan's ***. Ugh. Clear eyes for the win.

what's the timer for...?

If I were you I would sand down all the cable bosses because I know I would only use it as a fixed gear/Single speed.
Then I would leave it in it's natural polished chrome, but that's just me.
Nice-looking frame btw and good job with the polishing.

I'm into freshwater live planted aquariums....the timer controls the lighting...8 hours per day.

Thanks! I'm contemplating grinding down the bosses...but what i REALLY want to avoid is grinding them down too far so I expose holes...kinda scared.

I appreciate the compliments...totally into the project.

i knew it had to be an aquarium thing... i have a bunch of timers laying around... i have reef tanks... from a couple of clubs too...


nice tank BTW... i'm going to build an amano style 60 cube soon...

Did you find the frame inside an aquarium?

negative ghost writer...however...all rusty issues aside...the price was right so I picked it up.

i use a timer for my christmas trees. how long do you think its gonna take you to finish the project?

thats a brass braised that frame you got there you wont get the gold out of it its never gonna be all bare metal

at this point...i'm limited on my build due to finances...i hope to be close to completion by the middle-ish of may? if i had the cash, i'd be done at the end of next week.
