I'll turn 64 in July of this year.

What month for Tejano Trackie?

=====

A properly fitted fixed gear bike will heal knees, rather than hurt them.

June. Gotcha!

It was a change, but I think it was a good one as I've had no significant knee discomfort since I did the switch, over a couple years now. It's like if you sit on your foot it will hurt briefly when the circulation comes back, but it's a good thing. I think it was a similar thing, where I was getting a fuller and more comfortable range of motion from having a little float.

Sheldon Brown recommends you lower your saddle a tiny bit if you're using clipless, compared to clips&straps. When I adjusted, it made a huge difference.

What are you trying to accomplish and what's age have to do with it?

If you think that owning a Steamroller will make you happy, why not?
Are you a fool for wanting one? Probably but what's that got to do with anything?

I've shared my worst nightmere several times on BF. It's all of my kids standing around my casket and talking about "how sensible" dad was. Is that how you want to be remembered after you kick?

Oh - and if I wanted to I'm old enough to call TejanoTrackie "sonny".

I don't believe any of you are actually over 45. If you were there is no way you would know how to use the internet with such competency.

So I have five years left in me, eh? Is that what you're saying? ;)

FINALLY tried out a S'roller today... first time on a fixed gear. Weird but cool at first. Only rode it around the block, but by the time I made it back to square, I had a pretty good feel for it. Hopefully have one by the end of the week.

I'd love to have a Steamroller. They are so classy looking and practical too.

And fendery. ;[ humph.

TheBikeRollsOn 04-23-10 11:30 PM

Yes, they are quite fendery. Though, I could fit fenders on my bike because it's a conversion... hmmm.

RoyIII 04-24-10 01:32 AM

I'm 66 and ride fixed gear. I'll be right back on it when I have had a little more rehab from a hip replacement.

I believe the problem was actually from learning how to rotate my ankle out to unclip that was hurting my knees initially. It was just a new movement that I didn't ever really have to make. As for Sheldon's recommendation, I found that I actually had to raise the saddle a bit; my clipless pedals were taller and then the added height from the cleat, vs. my shorter quill pedals and thin-soled shoes.

My new business partner is 75... he has been riding nearly every day for over 60 years... and still rides fixed.

He can tear my 44 year old legs off and still strikes fear into the spandex wearing roadies that like to ride out in his part of the country as it is very humbling to be climbing those hills at what you think is good speed and have a senior citizen pass you... while riding his touring bike.

He is actually the subject of a long term medical study as he defies the perceptions of what a 75 year old man can do and figures he has another 25 good years of riding left in him.

:D

Fenders are the sign of a dedicated and practical cyclist... once upon a time nearly every bike had fenders save for race specific bikes.

I usually think bikes without fenders look a little naked and incomplete.

fenders just look so mary poppins to me unless done right. I like the idea of the quick mount/dismount ones because i hardly ever ride when it's raining

I'm 60 till I get on my bike. Then I am 10, again.

TheBikeRollsOn 04-24-10 10:48 PM

Do fenders have any negative effects on longer rides?

I love the Steamroller.

I think it represents, by far, the best designed, best built and most versatile fixed gear bike on the market.

If I had it all to do over again, I'd go with a Steamroller.

AlanKHG 04-25-10 08:39 PM

The Steamroller could definitely use fender eyelets. P-clips just don't work as well.

tiiger 04-25-10 09:06 PM

Well, this 45-year-old went and bought himself a new Steamroller today...

Had contemplated a used one on Craigslist, but the savings wasn't that much over new, so I bought a new one at The Hub Bike Coop in Mpls (great shop)... test rode it Friday, and I fell in love by the time I got it around the block.

At that point I had still planned on going to go with the Craigslist deal. But it was located about 90 minutes away, and just couldn't come up with enough time over the weekend to make the trip... Plus, the Hub was having a sale this weekend (save $50!), so I called 'em up this afternoon before they closed and credit-carded it over the phone, and I'll pick it up Monday or Tuesday.

Can't freakin' wait.
