Peugeot Triathlon BB and Crank?

I'm looking to upgrade the BB and cranks on my bike and i was wondering what are my options for it?

Here's the bike. From what i've read there's different versions of this bike (european, french, english)? and it's all a big mess in my head now. There is a number on the bottom of the frame but i can't remember it off the top of my head.

I was wondering whether or not i could get a Shimano 105 BB and a Sugino Messenger crank combination? or are there some sizing/dimension issues?

If not, what other options have i got?

Any help would be massively appreciated.

Thank you kindly!

If the bike is french threaded, then you'll need a french thread BB. Velo Orange makes a nice one.

Another option is to find a BB that could have the cups removed. I did this with a shimano UN72 and bought Phil Wood french cups. Could buy the Phil BB though, works the same way.

If you are english thread, any BB will do really.

Your combination will work. There are other Triathlons with the same setup on Velospace.

thanks for the reply.

how do i check to see if it's an english/french bb? is there an easy way to tell or is it a case of removing it and looking?

is that where the code on the base of the frame comes into play?

It is most likely that your Triathlon has english threading.

Threading of Peugeots

You can always check by taking off the crank/BB and checking, and if your going to replace it anyways, then that might be the easiest way to find out.

yeah its probably english. i think they switched away from french threading in the early-mid 70's and yours looks to be from the eighties.

thanks everyone...

after more looking into this, i have realised that the shimano 105 BB is splined and not a square taper, so would that mean that i a sugino messenger is off the cards?

would the Sugino Rd2 (103mm) be a better option? i've been reading things about dodgy chain lines?!

The triathalons are late enough so it is likely it is English (not French or Swiss, which is also an option on Peugeots). Every Peugeot Triathatlon I've worked on (I'm no longer sure how many) was English thread.

Sharps and flats , the switchover dates are as follows: Peugeot switched from French to Swiss BB threading about 1979, and from Swiss to English circa 1984. Exact dates are difficult to pin down, but that's the ballpark.

turns out that the BB is english and a Shimano UN54 fit it perfectly (decided against the Sugino BB due to me not getting the messenger crankset anymore - The FSA Gimondi has taken my fancy instead)

sorry to be a complete pain... but is the headset a standard size and if so what am i looking for?

thanks again everyone... you've been immense help!
