Damn, you guys weren't kidding about the brake levers. Thought I'd be able to get away with holding on to the stock brakes for a bit, but I cannot stand those things.

Changes so far:
Bullhorns complete w/horrible wrap job (first time!)
New tires (Gatorskin 28s for the ugliness of NYC commutes)

Priority 1 changes:
Brakes (maybe just levers, but those SRAM Apex seem like good brake for the money) [Edit: Ordered some Kool Stop dual compounds on recommendation, but I still hate those levers!]
Pedals (still trying to figure that out, but would love some recommendation on not-too-spendy strap/cage options)

Priority 2 changes:
Seat
Stem/headset (I recognize they're not great, but at least seem serviceable for now)

At the very least, I now know I can put a bike together! And for $300, it gave me some freedom to play around. A great learning process for sure, and the perfect excuse to buy all those [strike]toys[/strike] tools I always wanted.

I still need to order some spokes for my wheel build, a brake lever, and caliper since I'm not a cool skidding guy like most of you. I am really looking forward to riding the damned thing.

painting

Finally got around to painting mine. Metallic black duplicolor. Looks pretty sweet. I left it in my parents' "dry as a bone" basement until I go back next week and put a few coats of clear on it.

Not a great pic, but it gives you an idea..

2009 Madison size large. Found a few that were new old stock. Luckily I wanted the 2009. Haven't begun the customization yet...

Mine should arrive tomorrow, I plan on replacing the pedals, stem, bars, and seatpost to take a couple pounds off. Is a +/-10 Degree stem a good replacement for the standard 6? Standard or O/S?

PS Has anyone found any fenders that will work with the Madison if at all?
Thanks

Try the race blade fenders. I have some but haven't tried to put them on the madison yet. they are adjustable and go on and off easily and are pretty low-profile so would probably look good on a Madison.

Depends on what you to achieve. I wanted a stem level to the ground like the 70's & 80's road/track bikes, so I went +/- 17. If you want more height, then +/- 10 might be good for you...

Been riding and enjoying my Madison for a few weeks now. Didn't get around to posting pics, though....lazy. Upgrades: Origin Urban bars, removed wheel stickers, Soma steel cable guides, removed head badge, Wald front basket. Fun ride!

Thanks. It's a very practical upgrade since I keep this bike in my office. Perfect daily runner for lunch, bank, post office, errands. Super deal on Amazon, too. I think I paid about $12 for it and it's sturdy. I have a couple of bungee cords in there and it's a great way to carry the u-lock and strap down whatever I need to carry. Donuts, beer, etc.

Five years ago I tried for a while to get my boss to sell me the one in that picture. It is fairly old. But apparently it meant it meant something

I've had that in my wish list for months! Glad to know its worth buying... Now that I see your build it makes me want to keep the Madison as a grocery getter... But alas, money holds more of a precedent at the moment.

Yeah, I would love to come across a boss with a nice original Madison like that!

Well mine came in today, just took some pics while we were assembling it and when I got home. The levers are awful, truly. Riser bars, new levers, pedals, stem, saddle will eventually be changed. Ill get those up as they happen. The bike is very comfortable though and its beautiful, even the animals think so. This is an XL.

The levers.. These seemed so counter intuitive that I feel like I may have installed them incorrectly. Can anyone verify? They really are horrible.

you want them way up at the top of the bars.

or way down on the drops with shims. if they're too small to fit way up by the stem, then put them right down in the drops.

terrible bars. the new madisons really leave me unimpressed. anyone see the 80's colorway?

I like the bars. The best position to put the stock levers in is pointing down right next to the grips. They're too small to fit right next to the stem.

So far I have received most all of my parts. I am still waiting on my spokes and am debating whether or not I should polish my rims (which I probably won't because I'm lazy). Also don't know if I want to use the factory bar.

The frame has been faced and chased, and I installed the bb, crankset and headset. I still haven't decided how much, if any, of the steer tube will get cut down. I always hate doing it because it's such a commitment.

I still need to ream the seat tube to 27.2 and align the dropouts, but once that's done the wheel build will be all that's left. I am getting anxious to ride because it's been sooooooo beautiful out lately.

Here's my Maddy with my new MKS Sylvan Touring pedals. They're 100x more comfortable than the stock ones. I can fit the entire width of my shoe on the pedals. They spin well, appear to be well built, and I got them for $20.

And here is the best position for the stock brake lever:
