MKS GR-9 and double toe clip installation
I hope this is the appropriate place to post this.
I purchased a set of MKS GR-9's and double clips and straps to put on the Steamroller and thought I'd pass on what I did to install them. First the bottom line - good pedals that readily hold double clips and straps.
1. The GR-9's I purchased were essentially free of bearing grease and the axle was ratcheted down a little too tight. Getting the dust caps off was hell. I took a nice chunk out of one of my thumbs with the edge of a small screwdriver before saying the hell with it and drilling a big, fat hole right in the center of the caps and then when I reinstalled them I took a small piece of aluminum foil and put it in the cap as backing and then filled the hole in with shoe goo. It didn't take much to make the job smooth and attractive.
FYI - a nickel fits perfectly over the dust cap hole but not into the the little retaining groove. I think a touch of shoe goo on just the top (opposite of the groove designed to let you pop the cap off) would hold the nickel and let you get it off the next time you needed to grease up.
2. Once you remove the retaining bolts and washer squirt or pinky finger in grease on the bearings on that end to hold the bearings in place. Not a ton of grease. Just enough to hold the bearings so they won't spill out when you work on the other end.
3. Pull out the axle and some of the bearing will fall out of the inside race. Put them back in nice and neat and fill area with grease.
4. Slide axle back in, put bolt-washer-bolt back in and tighten to your liking.
5. Fill the area with grease and put dust cap back on while grease oozes out of everything.
6. Clean up the pedal and that is done.
7. The GR-9 is designed for a single strap but the front strap of a double fits nice and secure running under the pedal and over the top of the clip bolts. Works great, holds secure and looks good.

Scrodzilla,
One cap popped off with gentle pressure. The other one was really in there for some reason. My thumb is still throbbing from digging the screwdriver into it. The worst part about it is the cost of replacement caps. There's no way I'm coughing up 6 bucks for those. That's why I did the little home remedy. But, I want to agree with you - there is no way it should be that difficult.

I didn't know anyone needed a manual for it. Pretty easy. (except I wish they would tell me the torques of the locking nut)
P.S. Maaaan, I just did an overhaul on my GR-9. Everything. Only to strip the threads on the lock nuts. Now my GR-9 is unusable. Did you know those lock nuts are not standard-sized? I can't find em at hardware stores. I wish they use M8 or 5/16 bolts/nuts. Prolly M7, but anyone know?

Call up LBS and find out. You could probably call up the manufacturer.

I know some people cut em and attach strap ends. I just dunno AllCity straps can let you do that.

Most people put toe straps on backwards because they look better that way. You at least have them on the usable way, but the ends should go under the roller like PHR3AK said.
