Fork
I got into a really bad crash Friday night. Hit a pothole full speed and flew. My face is swollen.
I bent the **** outta my fork and need to get my wheel trued. Now, I found a fork at my LBS for $50. Its just a black no-name chro-mo fork. I am wondering if its worth it to put extra money into a nicer fork.. I am riding a Pake. Note to self: get a decent headlight so I can see potholes. A helmet too. |
Nashbar has carbon forks for $90. Idk, might be worth it, might not. But I'd probably be more focused on spending some money on a light and helmet.

i know, i know. but you gotta admit, don't you always have a morbid curiousity at what the outcome looks like? not trying to be mean, if I had injured myself, there's be pictures everywhere. i'd make it my avatar.

returning to point...
find one thats in 1", threadless/threaded depending on what you did before. i still recommend the soma/pake since they have the same fork rake as the original, not changing the geometry. if you're really daring, get a chrome soma fork for 100 |

check with city bikes on the forks too, i know there is a salsa one there right now... also, if you are a rei member there is the extra 20% off outlet sale going on right now, so you might find lights cheap.
I love my carbon fork but as far as agressive city riding goes I dont think i would use one. also if you dont care about style too much bike farm has helmets for $10. |
Dude, don't get a carbon fork if you're going to be running into potholes, or anything.

Bustedcarbon.com was the pothole actually an open manhole cover? I mean, I've hit some seriously large and deep potholes with my road bike with carbon fork before, but it never broke on me. I've bent a steel fork once, but that was because I T-boned a car at about 15km/h under heavy braking. |

well, it's not like his steel fork held up any better.

I've been considering buying the threaded version to put on my geared steel allez to replace it's alu fork. I'd probably put the alu fork on my fixed gear because the fork on it may be bent and is a POS. So really I'd be upgrading 2 bikes at once, but I'm waiting for a good coupon to come by.

Did they or you check out the frame before installing a new fork?
Usually an impact hard enough to bend a fork also tweaks the frame. Enjoy |

that's why i bought it. seemed like the only cheap, 1" threaded carbon fork i could find.
I'm not as concerned about weight because it's a steel frame, a relatively light steel frame, but it is steel. However, it would be nice to have a smooth ride on the road bike while also slightly upgrading the fixed gear. |
I like my carbon fork and will most likely put on on all my future bikes even steel ones. I was super sketched out by carbon at first but if you look at the Clydesdale forums you see carbon as a regular material. If its recommended for a 250+ rider im sure its good. Also my carbon fork just feels more stable and responsive. Im sure not all carbon is like that but anyway...

carbon fork made a night and day difference compared to the steel fork that came on the kilo tt. i even did some light off-roading on them and they held up.
edit: was also ~1lb lighter than the stock fork (and i'm talking about a cheap $100 carbon fork from bikeisland, no high-end stuff here, but noticeable weight savings). |
