Fork

I got into a really bad crash Friday night. Hit a pothole full speed and flew. My face is swollen.
I bent the **** outta my fork and need to get my wheel trued.

Now, I found a fork at my LBS for $50. Its just a black no-name chro-mo fork.

I am wondering if its worth it to put extra money into a nicer fork..
I am riding a Pake.

Note to self: get a decent headlight so I can see potholes. A helmet too.

TheBikeRollsOn 06-14-10 05:34 PM

Nashbar has carbon forks for $90. Idk, might be worth it, might not. But I'd probably be more focused on spending some money on a light and helmet.

i know, i know. but you gotta admit, don't you always have a morbid curiousity at what the outcome looks like? not trying to be mean, if I had injured myself, there's be pictures everywhere. i'd make it my avatar.

returning to point...

find one thats in 1", threadless/threaded depending on what you did before. i still recommend the soma/pake since they have the same fork rake as the original, not changing the geometry.

if you're really daring, get a chrome soma fork for 100

Hope you'll get better soon.

i'm riding that nashbar carbon fork. it's a good time.

I've been considering buying the threaded version to put on my geared steel allez to replace it's alu fork. I'd probably put the alu fork on my fixed gear because the fork on it may be bent and is a POS. So really I'd be upgrading 2 bikes at once, but I'm waiting for a good coupon to come by.

bleedingapple 06-15-10 03:28 AM

check with city bikes on the forks too, i know there is a salsa one there right now... also, if you are a rei member there is the extra 20% off outlet sale going on right now, so you might find lights cheap.

I love my carbon fork but as far as agressive city riding goes I dont think i would use one. also if you dont care about style too much bike farm has helmets for $10.

WoundedKnee 06-15-10 04:02 AM

Dude, don't get a carbon fork if you're going to be running into potholes, or anything.

well, it's not like his steel fork held up any better.

was the pothole actually an open manhole cover?
I mean, I've hit some seriously large and deep potholes with my road bike with carbon fork before, but it never broke on me. I've bent a steel fork once, but that was because I T-boned a car at about 15km/h under heavy braking.

From what I could tell those were almost if not all due to impact with something... dont know if thats a fare picture of carbon...

that's why i bought it. seemed like the only cheap, 1" threaded carbon fork i could find.

My bike is actually at City Bikes. They found a cheap replacement fork for $50 that will work. They said the Salsa is 1 1/8" but City makes a white track fork on the cheap.

My frame is black though.. Would riding a white fork be super stupid?
Time is just an issue, I need my bike by Friday for work :(

powers2b 06-15-10 02:33 PM

Did they or you check out the frame before installing a new fork?
Usually an impact hard enough to bend a fork also tweaks the frame.

Enjoy

The frame is fine. I decided to go with the $50 no-name cromo fork. I am riding a Pake after all. No point putting a nice fork on a ****ty frame.

Will be stoked to get my Soma Rush in 6 months or so though :)

And for the record, I wasn't drunk when I got in this accident. Just riding fast in a hurry.

How is it? Do you consider it to be worth the investment? Is there a noticeable difference in how the bike feels in terms of smoothness, or is there a noticeable difference in weight?

I'm not as concerned about weight because it's a steel frame, a relatively light steel frame, but it is steel. However, it would be nice to have a smooth ride on the road bike while also slightly upgrading the fixed gear.

bleedingapple 06-15-10 10:36 PM

I like my carbon fork and will most likely put on on all my future bikes even steel ones. I was super sketched out by carbon at first but if you look at the Clydesdale forums you see carbon as a regular material. If its recommended for a 250+ rider im sure its good. Also my carbon fork just feels more stable and responsive. Im sure not all carbon is like that but anyway...

tFUnK 06-16-10 04:15 AM

carbon fork made a night and day difference compared to the steel fork that came on the kilo tt. i even did some light off-roading on them and they held up.

edit: was also ~1lb lighter than the stock fork (and i'm talking about a cheap $100 carbon fork from bikeisland, no high-end stuff here, but noticeable weight savings).

i mean, it's really not much more expensive than the (imo) horrible looking other options for cheap steel forks. never rode the bike without the fork, so can't really comment on differences versus my stock flite 100 fork. it does have an aluminum steerer, so it's not gonna be super super light. but why not, dude? a little lighter and dampens bumps.

Ok, sorry for the totally newb question, but just how much difference does it make going from a raked fork to a straight fork? Does the straight one make it more agile?

Well that's true and if I really needed a new fork I'd probably do that, but unfortunately I don't necessarily "need" a new fork so it's harder for me to justify spending the money. Like I said I'll probably pick it up if I see a good coupon on nashbar.

TheBikeRollsOn 06-16-10 01:58 PM

Ugh, I just noticed a 20% off coupon on nashbar... ****.

a straight blade you mean? a curved fork can have the same rake as a straight blade, for example

http://store.somafab.com/sostbltrfo.html
http://store.somafab.com/sothfo.html

can have the same rake.
its all about the rake.

however, if your original fork has say, 40mm of rake and the new one has 42, there's little to no difference that you'll feel. Going from 28 to 45, will.
