Got an old Takara steel frame, butted. It has a dent, about 2 inches long, on the right outside of the chainstay. The paint is still on. It has a couple of small rustspots, and some other minor scratches and wear. The dent is close to the bottom bracket, and it has a brace between the two stays.

The dent is like a crease. Wanted to make a SS project type ride out of it.

Is this frame safe enough to rebuild ?

I'd have to see a pic, but a lot of frames have creases on the right stay to allow space for the big chainring. The brace between the stays is normal too. I wouldn't worry about surface rust spots or scratches as long as the frame feels solid.

bombusben, you are the physic guru who does not need a photo.

isotopesope, it has a badge. Know much about Takara ?

I think it was a toy co. that could KO'ed from the bike biz by Taiwan . Seems like a nice frame.

If I think what you are saying is correct . That crease is normal on most frames. They also have them on the inside of the stays also..

I've an old Takara steel frame and there is no dent there. It's a "Highlander" mountain bike frame.
