I am building up a single speed mixte for my girlfriend. I would like to use 27" wheels. I will have the wheels built. I have a set of formula hubs. Anyway I am having a hard time finding information on 27" rims.

Can anyone recommend a good quality 27" rim for regular city riding. Not looking to spend a fortune just looking for a good general quality rim that can take a narrower tire.

Hey I saw that set on-line. Wasn't so sure about the CR18 rims though I read mixed reviews. They are good though?

I have a set of Sun M13s which are pretty much the same rim (except a little narrower) on my Premium Brew. They're light, tough as nails and I love them.

CR-18s are good, but if you're looking to use narrow tires, the rims run a little on the wider side. The M13II is another good basic rim, though I'd classify it as a lot narrower than the CR-18.

Regardless, is there a particular reason you're going for 27"? On a lot of older bikes designed for 27" wheels, there's enough travel in the brake pad adjustment to use 700c wheels. There's nothing fatally wrong with 27" (I still have some fantastic, original 27" wheels on my old Fuji), but given the much more limited rim and tire selection, all the new wheels I've put on old 27" frames have been 700c. If you do go 700c, I've had very good experiences with the Mavic Open Sport, which lies somewhere in between the CR-18 and M13II on width, though I think it's typically a bit more expensive than the Sun rims mentioned above.

kyselad is right - I didn't really realize how much more narrow M13s are than the CR18. They also come in 27" for around 30 bucks each:

The tire selection for 27" rims is p-poor.

If you are going new, why not spring for 700c?

I want to run 27" wheels because the frame is an old motobecane mixte and I will be using a dia-compe centre-pull brake on the rear. I am a little nervous about lining a 700c wheel up with the rear brake.

I like the looks/price of the M13II rims. What is the range of widths I could run as far as tires.

You could use 27x1 1/4" tires with those, or even 1 1/8".

Yeah, you really have to search to find a set of 27" doublewall rims.
