Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Outrageous luck with a rack

While not strictly fixed/SS related I had a remarkable piece of luck early this morning. I was out on a ride for the first time in about 6 weeks (I had foot surgery so was off the fixed. I could still ride geared but that was just necessity riding). So, I'm riding past a business area and see one of those heavy, steel bike racks one usually associates with parks that can hold 8-10 bikes. It's over 12 foot long. Anyway, it was sitting out in the parking lot like it was waiting to be picked up as there was no construction or repairs going on in the parking lot. So, I stopped and asked one of the workers what was up and he said they were getting ready to take it to the dump because they were going to be placing buried bike stands in later today. I asked if I could have it. They asked the boss and he said I could as long as I got rid of it within a couple of hours. I immediately called a man I know with a flatbed and it's at my home. Not a damn thing wrong with it. It's chocolate brown and no rust. Again, absolutely nothing wrong with it at all.

So, the section of driveway I'm setting it on near my fence line is toast. I have an awesome home store near to me and this weekend is going to be spend replacing said toasted section with hand laid brick (and lots of sand - ha ha) to create an attractive, dedicated bike parking area. Mrs. OFG is on-board. I better not screw it up.

LOL. I doubt Mrs. OFG would be onboard with a project like that.

Cool. There really aren't enough bike racks or good places to lock my bike up in town. This is a good idea. I wish they would put better racks in

If people lock their bikes on your property and they get stolen, are you liable?

Jokes aside, sounds like an awesome find and project. Post pictures when you get to it.

f50fan,

Oh God, locks? Never really think of them around here. I have 7 guard cats. Mess with my stuff and they'll roll around in front of you and cute you into putting everything back. My driveway looks like a Tokyo version of Wild Kingdom on days like today.

I think I'm taking things to the next level and installing a 3 sided overhang over the rack. I think there is a car port kit at the home store that will do nicely. I'll measure it out, tomorrow. I'm going to have to work out how to keep the pillars straight while the concrete cures. Never done that before.

Damn wrong rack again.

lol back to topic. I have one of these at my brothers food joint
He lets people bring his bikes inside and hang em up on the wall or in the bike rack.
Its pretty cool. He got his bike rack from outside of a old old lbs the owner gave away a couple antique frames and my bro just puts it up in the burger joint. pretty legit.

Nice find btw!!

Nice find; now that you've gotten such a large rack it is your duty to fill er up.

happypills,

I've got 6 in there right now. They actually take up the entire rack but I have the bikes nicely spaced. 2 more could fit comfortably and still have "no touch" space. No matter what I do when the kids have friends over they'll fill up the driveway. What is it with kids seeing a non-existent bike rack right in front of my car anyway?

Have you ever opened up a can of sardines?

Yea kids will kids... hipsters too, aside from the fact that they stack theirs all up in a huge pile...

OK. It looks like the bike port will be installed in a week or two. They have units specifically for bicycles. They sort of look like big, swoopy upside-down L's. We're getting a big one. About $700 but they bring it, install it and come back to verify the work. Not free but not so damn bad. Given the fact the rack I got for free seems to retail for around $550 one could argue I'm getting the overhang for $150. Everybody's happy on this one. It's fun.

my most outrageous cycling luck was ordering discounted rival shifters and getting new reds.
