A bike lock deters an otherwise honest citizen from becoming a bike thief. Habitual, repeat offender bike thieves won't care what type, brand, model or how much you spent on the lock, they'll have it picked about as fast, if not faster than some bike owners with the actual key for the lock.

I think a pretty foolproof way is a U-Lock through the frame and front wheel, then a cable lock through the back wheel, frame and U-Lock. Probably overkill but I'd rather look like a dweeb than have another bike stolen.
