Thief caught.

So Friday night ( last night) i and a few friends take our rigs on a 10 mile ride to our local pub for drinks. The bartender gives us, fixed gear riders ( he is one too), beers for happy hour prices..the area we live in has a lot of yuppies and swarmers so I think the bar likes having us around...

Anyway.

We were inside having a good time. Talking shop and shooting it up, when we heard a commotion outside and people started hustling up to the front of the bar looking outside. So we went to see what was going on. The doorman, who was sitting by the front door saw two guys trying to Jack our bikes, he ran outside And started to stop them. One of them got on my friends bike and started riding away. We ran outside and caught him. Pulled him off the bike and threw him on the ground.

The other guy that was booting it up with the door man tried to hit the doorman with the bolt cutter he used to cut through our lock and chain.

Regardless. The bar is 1/2 a block from our main police station. Police were there in 3 mins flat If that.

Done deal. God it felt great to catch these A holes.

It's insane to me how easy it is to get a bike stolen. Had no idea....

Moral of the story. There is no moral. Thieves are *******s.

Glad nothing happened to your bikes and glad that it didn't turn into "dont steal bikes bro"

I have been taking to locking with both a U-Lock and another lock. Hopefully the two locks will ward off the thieves.

patthepunk 07-10-10 07:42 PM

Thats legit. Sounds like you got some good neighbors, and some not so nice A**holes.

Outstanding. I actually wish they had been roughed up more physically before the police arrived. I'm not a violent man but I do believe there should be a very real price associated with this sort of misbehavior. No one has to tell anyone that stealing is wrong. As humans, we know it intuitively. When we behave in such grossly inappropriate ways we should pay a very real price to teach both us and those who hear about it. Anyway, I hope they get more than a fine. You should be able to get their actual faces in the local newspaper. I'm serious. Call the papers and explain the circumstances and ask. They have no privacy rights if they are convicted criminals. Find out their names which should allow you to find out where they work or where they go to school. Make calls to these institutions. Actively make it known. Wanna' go full bore? Once convicted of their crime, go to a printing shop with their pictures and have a few hundred copies made with their faces and a quick explanation and stick them under car windshield wipers at the mall, near their jobs, at their campus, on poles - wherever. There is nothing wrong with doing this. You are breaking no laws. Make sure they pay for real.

Sometimes justice isn't enough. Make 'em pay.

chadwebster 07-11-10 01:02 AM

yea, let them have it, it will surve as an example to other would be a holes

Cyclist0383 07-11-10 01:22 AM

Glad to hear you guys kept your bikes.

Do you know exactly what kind of locks were being used?

Shortsocks 07-11-10 01:54 AM

The lock we used isn't the best. Actually it sucks.
Master Lock Key Cable Bicycle Lock.....

It's a cheapo. But we used to carry some better ones except they weigh a ton more. And no one wants to put it on their bikes. So I usually would put it in my messenger bag. Problem is that at the end of the night, we get kinda tipsy and it's a pain in the ass to carry heavy stuff with us. Specially because Texas gets so damn hot.

This one was light. But we shouldn't have been lazy. The bar is actually In a pretty good area too.

Side note:

Both of them were charged. And still are in jail. One of them actually had a prior for aggravated assault and several charges for theft. He has been in jail many times. 26 years old.( he was charged with destruction of private prop, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon) public intox, grand theft (all our bikes are worth over 1000 bucks).

The other one was and still is on probation for a DUI. 23 years old.
Charged with destruction of private property, grand theft, public intox. And apparently breaking his DUI probation.

They are both going to be in for a while. The detective contacted me today and said I'm prob going to go to court.

What blows my mind. Is why?
It's really odd to me why someone would go outnof their way to steal a bicycle. Why not steal a house wive's pearl colored denali with 22 inch chrome wheels instead?

It's a bicycle. It belongs to me. It's that easy.

I once stole some beef jerky from a gas station in montreal. And I still feel bad about that.

We are just some guys, who like to ride our bikes. We like getting drunk and riding home. We don't drink and drive, it's just plain fun.
Just guys who bust our asses off all week, at jobs we hate, to go out on a friday for a innocent night of riding and drinking.

WHY WOULD YOU STEAL OUR BIKES!!!!

Just plain messed up.

I understand. It would have sucked to walk home. And know that there is someout there trying to sell my bike for nothing, having no idea how much money and time also my soul into every part of that bike. They have no idea.

There needs to be a special treatment for bike thieves, specially ones who take fixed gears. I think ot should be to get their fingers stuck between the chainring and the chain. That happened to me one time. It really sucked. Almost lost my finger.

Socks

Because a shiny, chrome Bianchi with a cheapo cable screams STEAL ME!
You guys are quite lucky to catch them on the spot. This is the perfect chance to upgrade your lock, maybe a heavy duty chain and just fahgettaboudit.

Your answers are right in front of you. You are dealing with people who have decided all that matters is what they want. You are meaningless - which makes sense. They've already traded themselves in so you are a grain of salt. Hopefully, they'll turn themselves around. God didn't make any garbage. Being garbage is a choice. Usually a choice that at first looks like the easy way. Regardless, I say go to court, stick to the facts and let the system work. THEN pimp them out as I stated before.

Bike theft is a crime of opportunity and using a ****ty lock provides a thief with an opportunity

drewforty 07-11-10 01:13 PM

I just noticed you were in Dallas too. What bar were you at?

And yeah that's a crap lock for a $1000 bike no mater where you park it. Lesson learned I hope.

I use a Kryptonite Evolution Mini through my seat tube and rear wheel of my Kilo everywhere I stop.

I agree. In the time of Henry the 8th they would have tortured them. I would have sat front row. 3 bikes stolen myself

cg1985 07-11-10 03:42 PM

Additionally, Physical beat down would have provided instant reprocussion, which both operant and Classical conditioning in psychology shows us is MUCH MORE efficient than deferred punishment through the law's justice system. I'd have beat them up and told the cops they fell off the bike when they couldn't figure out how to slow down.

a good ass beating is what they deserved.

Shortsocks 07-11-10 04:10 PM

We were actually at vickory in Plano. It's got a longer ride for us...3 miles is kinda worthless so we do 10. But the bartender there we know commutes to there because he's the manager there now. It's odd. The vickory in downtown, I went there for lunch when I was in college 2 years ago.and some a hole (48 year old guy, drunk, Porsche driver, ****** bag) came out of no where and coldcocked me in the eye. Sucked.fell off my chair and got a black eye. He was drunk and told the cops he punched me because he didn't like SMU. So I don't go to that one anymore.

I really contemplated, my friend and I, beating the living tar out of him, but we are both barred attorneys. And don't want to deal with the hassle. John rousche , the D.A of Collin county is a really tough guy. Its just not worth it. Also. We did kinda scruffed his face, arm and legs when when we pulled him off the bike.

It's cool. I'll be in court. And I think I know the A.D.A who will be prosecuting it, wish I could find out more but that would be unethical.... ;)
