Seven days ago I sent out copies of Riding Fixed to the many PM's and emails I recieved. These copies were sent out free of charge with the obligation that the recipient would do something nice for a total stranger by sundown on the day the book was delivered. The deeds were to be posted on this forum. Gentlemen, I have yet to see anyone honor this contract. May I remind you of the hard work Karstens, Karsten's friend, 165, myself, and others put in to allow the book to be in your hands now. You have a duty and we expect you to honor it. Get out there and do the right thing

How do I get one?

I actually got my copy on Friday, but I haven't been home since then.

Anyway, Friday was also the day that I was picking my bike up from the LBS with my new crankset. So I took my never-opened Primo chain tensioners to see if I could barter with the owner since I know the shop does a good deal of BMX business. But before I went in I saw a relatively young kid, maybe 14, tooling around on a BMX bike outside. So I offered the tensioners to him and he was happy to take them. I know, I know. That's pretty lame, and really not far from the usual for me. There are just too many people locked away in their four-wheeled machines around suburbia at night.

So:
I owe you at least one much better story.

PS - Riding Fixed is pretty awesome. It has inspired me to take a more zealous approach to embarrassing over-serious, lycra-wearing jerks.

Well, I got the first edition. Is there a second edition?? Did I miss something? Anyway, I already cook at a soup kitchen on Sundays, donate to Amnesty International every month and am doing the Oxfam Challenge ride in Sri Lanka next year for which I have to raise 5 grand. I don't think I have enough goodness left. I'm spent. Send me a second edition anyway. Thanks.

Yah. Bona Fide tales of good samaratinship I can spin, but how do I do so without the sweat inspiring inspiration of this mythical publication throbbing in my hot little hands?

What I mean to say, is that this publication sounds like a good read and, whether by money or deeds, how does one earn such a thing?

Can I just say I'd been stressing over this? I hadn't come across any little girls needing to find their way home; no lost wallets to be returned to their rightful owner. I did introduce myself to my neighbor and gave him my extra helmet when I saw him heading out on his bike without one.

Oh, and thanks for sending it! It was a great read.

I didn't get a free one, but paid waaay back, when they came out. But today I held my patience with a co-worker who takes a sack of negativity with her everywhere. Instead of losing patience I brought us on track and got all 220 sophomores on track for a writing assignment. Yipee-yi-yo, yipee-yi-ye. Yet I was a bit selfish because I feel better for having done a good thing.

got the book at 1;30 am when I got home from work-have thought all day about the good deed-held doors, fix neighbourhood kids bike (do that all the time anyway, I gave him the piece of....mountain bike w gears), kept the rpm down on my truck coming home at 1 am as exhaust is loud, thinking all day of a good deed, a good thing for someone that would help them-I will, but the time frame is too short, tommorrow putting in a walk for my sister in laws yard while she is at work (birthday present), still not what I was thinking of..............loved the book, I owe you.....or someone...

i am not under any contractual obligation. However, since this thread is about good deeds, I feel I have one to share:
When I was out riding yesterday, I happened upon a cyclist stopped on the side of the road in a part of town that is heavy with industry. He was riding a beat up old recumbent and behind it, was carrying a trailer. I stopped and asked if he had everything that he needed in the interest of spreading good will, making a friend...whatever. as it turns out Ben has been riding for a month and is from Minneapolis. Which he tells me is the capital of Minneana. He asks me how to get to Winton Woods, where he plans on setting up camp for the night. Seperating us from the park is a BIG hill. No matter how you look at it, Ben has some nasty climbing ahead. I try to explain the best way to get there, but the problem is that I know this area of the city too well. I don't know the street names because I have no use for them. So I tell him to just follow me. "By the way, I live only 2 miles from Winton Woods. If you want to save a couple bucks you can camp in my yard and I may be able to swing you some dinner, Ben." So my new friend, on his way to Texas, came back to my house. We gave Ben dinner, a couple beers, a free campground and breakfast. This morning Ben packed up his belongings into his little trailer and headed out for Texas. I hope that he makes it there and back to Minneapolis safely.
