Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

PDX, tark town usa... Actually its not as bad as it used to be when I moved here 2 years ago... We even have unicycle commuters! Though the other day I got a great laugh (my girlfriend had pointed it out asking why?) saw this girl board a train to downtown (its like 2miles, though downhill the whole way) with her brakeless fixie... Yep no brakes + hill + wanting to look cool but not knowing how to actually use your equipment = fail... Anyway, just because its fixed doesnt mean its a track bike, I love SS/fixed for the city, and have a geared, bordering on fred/tark franken bike for grocery shopping and the like... we have so many commuters here that I would say its maybe 50/50 as far as ss/fixed goes...

What I found most interesting in all three cities, especially SF, was that the brakeless fixed gear was conspicuously absent from the streets as a utility bicycle. In other words, I saw lots of them chained to posts, lots of them being walked, and quite a few being ridden slowly on sidewalks. (including one guy who rode his tarck bike in circles outside the SF ferry building for almost two whole hours one day). I saw almost none being ridden in traffic.

The bikes I saw most often being used for transportation or by what appeared to be bike messengers were old road bikes, mtbs, ghetto SS conversions, and purpose built fixed gears with brakes (i.e. Steamrollers, San Jose's, 925's, Paddy Wagons) - in that order.

It would be interesting (but entirely useless in the grand scheme of things) for someone with way too much time on their hands to actually quantify this observation and do a mathematical analysis of the results (in other words, stand on a corner and count bikes that go by).
Are you on DavisFixed?

Didn't really hang out in SF too much, but when I do go there I see a bunch of people on "fixies" bolting around the city, saw a few messengers running fixies too, but they all had brakes. ^^

Tons of SS/FG folks in the Mission district in SF. I was just there this weekend and most of the bikes there were SS/FGs. Part of it depends on the district too I think. Nobody is going to go up and down California St. in SF on a SS/FG.
