Hit by a car
I was riding my SS Mercier Kilo TT Pro to work on Friday morning when a 92 year old lady made an unsafe left turn in front of me. I was going about 35-40km/h when I slammed on my brakes. I almost missed her but I skidded into her rear right tail light and went flying. I have been, and still am in the hospital since Friday morning (my younger brother lent me his extra laptop). I broke my left thumb and tore a ligament in it, I smashed up my left shoulder and have some sweet road rash there, my helmet lost a few chunks when my head hit and I also have a collapsed right lung. I had some surgery yesterday where they inserted a tube into my chest to relieve the air that leaking out of my lung and into the chest wall as well as some blood that had accumulated.
My Mercier is a wreck. The front fork is bent back behind the downtube of the frame and the frame has bowed outwards. Surprisingly the wheels are still round! I'll post some pictures when I'm allowed to go home in a couple of days (Hopefully) It really sucks. That was a new bike :( |
Damn dude. Whos fault was it? Did the old lady stop? Bikes can be replaced. Glad to hear you are ok, or at least recovering!!
|
Heal well, and soon.
|
You speak like a true cyclist.:D You lament more the loss of your bike, than the injuries you suffered.:injured:
Wish you a quick recovery.:) |
She was charged at fault at the scene for an unsafe left turn. I hope I heal soon because this pan sucks. Even with the Percoxets and Oxycodones (don't know if that's how they're spelled lol0

Wish you a speedy recovery man.

Wouldn't have been so bad if it wasnt for the collapsed lung, that's gotta suck. How do they fix that?
And yeah i'm always very watchful of left turning cars when im crossing intersection. The real question though is why a 92 year old woman allowed to drive a vehicle? |
if she was at fault, chances are you can get her (insurance) to pay for the new bike.
getting hit sucks, but at least you're alive and recovering. |
hope you have a quick recovery....
|
Thanks so much everyone.
The way they fix a collapsed lung is to cut a hole into your side between your ribs and insert a plastic tube to drain out the leaking air and blood. My tube is draining thro9ugh atmospheric pressure but they can also use a pump if it needs to be vented faster. I have to wait till the perforated lung corrects itself before they can remove the tube. I have the ladies car insurance number but I'm going to be contacting a personal injury lawyer tomorrow to see what they suggest I do. |
i found most of my accidents or near accidents tend to be on vehicle left turns so now i became extra careful around those. Ur accident sounds horrible. Hope u'll recover soon.

My ride home is down a long (about a mile), somewhat steep hill. People ask me why I go down the main boulevard with heavy traffic rather than the bike lane just one block north. It's because the BLVD has a median so that the opportunities for left turns in front of me are a lot less. It's pretty rad that you've got a computer to keep you company in there. You'll get better, and be more awesomer for this experience. Hang in there.
|
Get well soon dude. I would just like to reassure you insurance should cover over your bike.
|
Thanks TT. Your wreck sounds worse than mine. I always make sure to wear my helmet whenever I ride even if it's just around the corner. My helmet is now garbage but that's ok because I wanted to get e new one anyways.
I'm super pissed because I was supposed to start a provincial practical exam today to become a registered dental technologist (they only hold the test once a year). I was able to call the College of Dental Technologists of Ontario (the governing board for my profession) and have my test changed to the second sitting (of 2) which starts next Sunday. My job requires a lot of manual dexterity and hand strength and now I don't even know if I'll be able to do next weeks test if I don'y get this tube out. I currently can't lift my arms up and I can't squeeze with my left hand because of the broken thumb either :(. I might have to defer my exam to next years sitting. |
Condolences. Don't forget to mention the missed exam sitting, and hence year of missed income, to your lawyer.
|
Oh, man. That's terrible. I hope you heal up to 100% really soon.
I hope that you get your medical expenses covered plus a new bike. Please, don't post pics. That kind of stuff just makes me skittish about road riding. |
Are you building your dream list for your next build, noticed you mentioned you wanted the black deluxe kilo frame?
|
No dream list. If I remember after the accident the components on the TT Pro are still ok.. it's just the frame that's fubar. Hopefully all I need to get is a new frame. II like the deluxe ones on bikeisland because of the chrome accents, the lack of logos and the water bottle attachments. I don't think I`ll be 100% for a while. The doctors told me the thumb could take months to heal and it may still need surgery to reattach a tendon. Also I may need to go through physio for my shoulder. Kinda ****ty because the only good riding weather here in Toronto is between May and October if you`re lucky.

Get well mang. Don't stress out.
Socks |
That sucks hopefully you get better soon.
Last year my lung spontaneously collapsed because I had a weak spot on my lung which popped and made a little hole. They couldn't get my lung to re-inflate with the chest tube and stuff, so they had to do a pleurodesis surgery. They roughed up the inside of my chest cavity and the outside of my lung and stuck them together. Now my lung is healed to the inside of my chest. |
Get well man, Im sorry to hear about the accident. Everything will work itself out.
|
God bless, and get well soon.
|
...All the best. Keep yo' head up, son.
