Some play in my fork?

So lately as I have been riding, I have noticed there seems to be some "play" in what I think is the fork. When I ride over bumps, I noticed the frame, or something on the frame, seems kinda loose and jostle's a bit. It makes a somewhat loud noise. Kinda hard to describe. I have a threadless headset, and made sure it is tightened down, but am still getting this loose shaking noise when riding over bumps. Should I just take off the fork, clean it, and re-install it? Is this pretty easy to do?

are you loosening the stem bolts before tightening the preload bolt? Is the cap pushing down on the stem and not the steer tube? Sometimes the steer tube sticks out high enough that the caps looks to be on the stem but is still pushing on the steer tube

I will double check this when I get home from work. I had been riding this bike previously for several months with no problems though, but I guess it is possible for them to come loose.

there's an easy way to make sure the headset is loose. You need to just straddle the bike, hold down the front brake, and rock the back and forth. You'll see/hear/feel the steer tube moving in the head tube. loosen stem bolts, tighten the top cap to eliminate play, tighten stem bolts

need more stack spacing. same exact thing happened to me. you shouldnt need to tighten the headset bolt down, you should be "setting" it. Add spacers. 4 - 5 mm, see if that works. If not, its something else.

^^^^^^^^ There should be absolutely no reason to add more spacers if the headset was functional before.
