"Ohhh It's a Fixie!"
#52
I think someone may have said this already, but I'm happy to live in a place where almost no one knows what a fixed gear bike is. I've shown a couple people and explained to them that it can't coast. They just go "oh... that's strange." And probably think I'm crazy.
I'm just glad I don't have to deal with all these "hipsters" I keep hearing about.

Yeah, I haven't seen any "fixie-riding hipsters" here either - which is odd because there is an art school less than a mile from my house. I see plenty of them walking around downtown and hanging out at the local coffee shops but hardly any of them ride bikes and the ones that do are on beat up old three speeds and whatnot.

Well Scrodzilla, that is probably because fixies are still pretty underground, mostly just messengers and alley cat racers, so pretty soon when they become popular more people around your city will start riding them to be cool, like they do in New York City or Lawrence, Kansas.

dsh - you were being snarkish, right???
Things are much different in the Boston area but here - 25 miles north - it's a totally different scene. Half of me wishes there werre more people around but the other half is kinda glad there aren't.

Well, I live in a huge metropolitan area, and they are pretty much non-existent here as well. In fact, the only time I've ever seen anyone else riding a FG where I live and ride, it has been other trackies doing their workouts on the road instead of travelling 60 miles to the track. Even the road racers don't winter train on FGs, the way we all used to back in the days when FG bikes were nothing more than conversions of really cheap road bikes. All the messenger / delivery people here ride geared bikes, usually hybrids. I think the FG phenomenon is always going to be localized to a few "hip" metro areas or college towns like Austin, TX.
Even when I lived in Baltimore when the FG scene was ramping up and bike messengers were highly-revered FG riders, all of them didn't ride fixed. Really only the under-25 guys/girls did. The old salty dog messengers either rode single speed or geared bikes. Lots of POS bikes, too.
