Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Bikes: Chromoly Allez comp with Ultegra/DA, IRO Rob Roy

After having my downhill bike stolen a few months ago I had just decided to not ride anymore. All I've ever done is freeride and downhill, so anything on the road is a little sissy to me. That is until one of the guys I used to work with started having me check out fixed gear. There isn't alot of "posers" out here in the middle of the pacific much less other riders. I'm picking up my first bike from him on Friday. its an old Cannondale he set up for me as a fixie.
Are there any major faux pas of fixed gear riding/ road biking I should know before I start? and how the hell do you get out of toe clips, all I've ever riddin is platforms and egg beaters. Thanks

Bikes: I built the Bianchi track bike back up today.

Keep the eggbeaters. They'd work fine.

Brakes are a faux pas. But you should keep them until you learn to skid. Some people think you should keep them on. They are sissies.

Spandex is a major faux pas. So is handle bar tape.

well I don't have the beaters anymore...reinvest or go with toe clips?

even say...pink spandex with pimped out old school sunglasses and green shag nipple rings on a critical mass ride?

it was mostly sarcasm, but if I can ride AND look like I'm just so cool, I'd love to sell out any sense of self expression to hop on a trend

I use Kenneth Cole handlebar tape, I just had a custom-made body suit that looks like clothing the singer of Franz Ferdinand would wear...BUT clipless pedals suck.

Steve Madden doesn't make shoes that are 'clipless ready'

What if I get dirty using a dremel? What is the dremel has grease on it and it gets all over my $180 jeans from Urban Outfitters?

Dremel nekkid. You might end up with a nice new hipster piercing. Or at least a scar that might get you arrested if you show it off in public...

scars are only cool if it is some sort of fashion statement...and I have to wait for someone else to do it first, and then once the world thinks it is cool, I'll do it.

Im building rancids bike for him. I pretty much had to force him to ride fixed. Its an older canondale with a bunch of random parts, but its solid. I'll give him a front brake and he'll be riding 39-14. How do you guys think i should paint it for him?

I am a big fan of rust/orange colorations. Molteni Orange being the extent of my snobbery.

"Molteni" orange... Funny how that matches pretty well with the various shades of outdoor safety orange.

That's what color mine is and I really like it, but I think if I were going to do it again, I'd probably pick another color, not because I don't like it but because I feel like the whole orange thing is starting to get played out. But still, it's a good color.

I refuse to let him turn into posenger. If i can help it. The force is strong in this one, He asked me the other day if i still had my old chrome bag... I'll paint his bike flat black. That should work out.

Dre, you didn't have to force me to ride fixed you lying bastard. It took about 2 hours of talking, some smokes and a few hands of blackjack and I was sold.
