has anyone ever...
...gotten a finger stuck between your chain and cog? While cleaning my chain this evening after a ride in the rain, I was pedaling with my right hand and wiping the chain with a rag in my left when suddenly

the rag - along with my thumb - gets cranked into my drivetrain from the underside and about 1/8" of the tip (nail and all) got completely severed (as in...it was still stuck in my chain). Blood everywhere. My office literally looks like a ****ing crime scene.
I was going to post a pic but they're all way too gruesome. I have a feeling it'll really hurt tomorrow.

The funny thing is, after one close call last year, I'm always ridiculously careful when cleaning a chain and tell everyone to keep their fingers at enough distance from the cog to pull away if you should slip up and turn the cranks very slowly.
It's not quite as bad as the pics on Sheldon's site but literally looks like a tiny guillotine took the very top of my thumb off.

No way. Like I said, I took a few and was going to post them but they look way too gross.
I shall have much more respect for my drivetrain from here on out. Either that or I'll neglect the hell out of it and never touch it again.

I'm really sorry, man. A little over 2 years ago I took about the same amount off of my thumb with a knife. Took a *long* time for that thumb to feel normal. There are a LOT of nerves in the tip of your thumb. What I didn't do, but I will recommend here is, get a splint (metal one from a pharmacy) to put over the thumb after it is dressed. You won't believe how many times you will whack that thumb and how excruciating it will be if you don't protect it.

Common' man! Post a pic! If the mods no likey they'll remove it. I got my pointer finger caught the same way but I only got a few punctures and it swelled a little the next day. (My finger actually knocked the chain off!) You must have little girly skin. ;0) Matter of fact I'll go first. Heres a pic of when my buddy got his eyeball caught in the chain.

Seriously... did you go to the hospital and stuff? The best thing for it is probably so sew the tip back on. It happened to me when I was in high school and that's what they did.

I had my bike upside down and left to go find my chain lube. I left the bike for like 20 seconds and my baby brother comes and gets his finger caught in the drivetrain. Nothing severed, but he was freaking out.
on this note, my dad once shot a nail through his finger with a nail gun.
