Wheelset Opinions
Hi, I'm doing a semi cheap fixie converstion from an old Miele. I was wondering if this wheelset look ok for the price?
http://www.nashbar.com/webapp/wcs/st...0052_517441_-1 I'll be using the bike for commuting on city roads. What should I take into consideration? Thanks |
For <$150, you can get a nice low profile Sun/Velocity rim from velomine. That'll probably look much better on your Miele.

Thanks, I think I may do that then.
The wheel width seems a fair bit smaller? What kind of affect does it have? |
The M13's are actually .5mm wider than the Vuelta.
http://bikeisland.com/cgi-bin/BKTK_S...ls&ProdID=1618 Narrower rims are more flexible with different tire sizes, you can read more on Sheldon's articles about tires. http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tire-sizing.html http://www.sheldonbrown.com/tires.html |
Hm, Sorry to steal the thread but what are your guys' opinion on the Miche Pistard wheelset?
|
Very nice hubs, pretty good rims for racing, terrible for commuting or urban riding.

I'm looking for a wheelset to put on a heavy older schwinn. Made for 27x1.25 wheels. I want to go with 700 for the new wheels.
They'll be used mostly for commuting but also some longer rides. Baltimore streets are awful so I'll take on a little extra weight for durability. I want to keep it under $200. I shy away from the m13s because they don't say who built the hubs... I'm new to bicycle stuff, I'm thinking of getting the weinmann dp 18 rims with the formula fixed/fixed hub... Mostly because harris cyclery stocks a similar set for $70 more. With my heavy frame and sometimes loaded rack, should I look for a 36 spoke rim over a 32? |
I'd get those M13 for $125...36 holes...3 cross, it will be a set of really solid wheels.
FWIW, those hubs on the M13 are Formula as well. |

scrod has both m13s and dp18s actually.
loves both. |

Scrod got me hooked on getting DP18's but you're kinda getting me withthose M13's..
Is there any reason why I would choose those over the 100 dollar dp18's? My favourite "aero" rim would be Kinlin XR-300 and my absolutely favourite box-section rims are Ambrosio 19 Extra Super Elite. I really really really regret that I sold them.. |
My weight fluctuates (during the seasons) from about 155 to 180.. Now I'm not very worried about weight, I doubt I'd even notice it on my kilo. But these two rims are probably what I'm deciding on since scrod kinda talked me outta the B43.
What I'm really worried about is that the roads I ride on, the routes that I take, it's not the best. The way I commute has a lot of bumps, cracks, and just typically crap roads. I do take my bike everywhere though, I just want to know the main differences between the two for my purposes and weight. Do you think M13's would be perfectly fine or I should stay with heavier rims for the roads and my weight.. |

I've heard people say mixed things about that, but good things about the CXP 33. Never seen or heard much about them.

I wouldn't exactly say you need heavier rims, I'd say you need a set of sturdy built wheels with a high spoke count, such as the M13. I'm not sure if Scrod has 32h M13 or the 36h, either way, he's a big dude and it is holding it up for him.
Just my .2 cents. :P I guess all that's left is to really just imagine what they would look like on my bike and go from there. Thanks dude. |
Scrod rides a unicycle.

Ok seriously.
This thread is way over analyzing the differences between sub $150 wheelsets. At that price point, there just isn't that much of a difference. Find some wheels, take them to your LBS for proper tensioning and ride the **** out of them. Put grease in occasionally. A well-built/tensioned wheel will last forever as long as you service the hub often enough. You're clearly not racing and I'm willing to bet you don't abuse you bike nearly as much as you think you do, so stop agonizing and just buy the damn wheels. ETA: oh yeah and make sure they look totally *****in |

calv - if you're thinking that M13s won't be tough enough for you because of your weight, think again...especially if you buy a properly built/tensioned set from Velomine. I happen to dig my DP18s too but there's something about a polished box-section rim that makes my guts go gooey. |
Thanks guys. Sounds like the difference between the M13 and DP18s is minor price and aesthetics.
Good to know they're all built around formulas. My local bike collective (LBC?) is doing a workshop on wheel truing next week so hopefully I can figure out how to tune them myself. |
Yeah, the rims at that price range will be similar. Make sure you get some good formula hubs, and not some crap like came on my bike.
