I've found layers work well...a liner glove of wool or similar (Pearl Izumi and Lake both make good ones) covered with a thin windstopper type glove; e.g. Gore, Man*****. Nashbar, Performance, etc. all carry both types. I've tried the expensive winter cycling gloves, but they are bulkier, cost more, and don't work as well as the layering. Just my 2 cents...

Bah. I have some wool (or faux wool) lined leather work gloves that I got from my father in law because they were too small for him. Warm and waterproof. Not maybe a premiere cycling glove, but good for commuting and free (in my case).

Hey, this ain't Miami here...course, it ain't Philly either. I admit to wimping out when temp gets below 40...35 if there's no wind, but there's always wind...

Totally.
I actually go with the fingerless gloves and the big fat workgloves in the bag (windproof ski gloves are nice if you got 'em, bound to be lighter weight than mine, but windproof is important). When my hands go numb or get really painful, it's time to switch.

i've never found a perfect pair of winter gloves
However, I can say that these gloves are terrible
they don't cut out wind and they aren't warm. hmm...

dabern,
how's the clean-up going down there? I have family in pensacola. They said it looks like an atom bomb was dropped . Trust me, it doesn't get nearly as cold in pensacola as it does up here. It was 32 degrees last night and we still have a ways to go before winter even starts.

gen129ss, we've had enough of Hurricane Ivan...have you ever been here? Do you remember what P'cola Beach looked like? Well, keep that mental image 'cause it won't ever look that way again. I can't believe the devastation. For Pensacola-proper, I think almost everyone now has power and phone restored, cable should be done before end of month. Major roads are cleared, but not many of the neighborhoods...if on a bike, one spends much of the time dodging debris...makes riding a challenge. On a more positive note, court was cancelled so I got out of jury duty!

dabern,
yeah I remember the beach. My relatives place is next to the navy base. they lucked out. Only had to replace some shingles. I guess some of the other neighbors weren't so lucky. I heard that perdido key was wiped out too. No more florabama lounge. I saw the picture of th tractor trailer that was trying to make it across the bridge. Poor fellow. The whole bridge collapsed. Not sure why someone would even try to cross it.
I was actually looking to buy a home there. I bet I could find something cheap now. I think I'll look inland. Be safe down there.

A trip to Wally-World and a walk down the hunting aisle will solve your problem. I recommend the florescent orange neoprene ones. Good down to about 0°F at 15-20 mph. And the high visibility aids in hand gesturing to drivers.
Anything between 20-30° I just throw a pair of cheap cotton work gloves over my riding gloves.
Above freezing, I don't bother, although sometimes my right index finger protests due to lack of blood circulation ( damn drunken frat antics ).
