Can a decent SS be had for under 400?
 

Yeah, it's this thread again.

So I've done my research and everything I find that seems to be quality is $600 and beyond.

Be patient I'm sure one will pop up in your local CL.

The probability of you finding what you want are inversely proportional to your expectations.

iro's having a great sale right now if you act quick maybe you can find a good bike for under 400. but then you have to have it shipped.

and the kilo tt is decent, even if it's not great.

what's decent to me might be garbage to someone else and a dream bike to another.

but you can pick up a single speed from walmart for like $150 i think. decent compared to nothing.

Under $400? Sure... a double butted cromoly Big Shot Mini Polo SS.

Only drawback is it comes with 20" wheels. But for the price, you can't really beat a light frame - and if you like to barspin, go for it! :D

I think most of the bikes at Bikesdirect are "decent".

I dont know if that bike could get any more ugly.

I have the green one in my living room...it works well with silver Weinmann 406 wheels and Greenspeed Scorcher tires.

if you can get past "bike snobbery" you can get a very nice singlespeed for under $400. The bike wont be an 18 lb bike with deep v's and all stylish with the hiptsers applauding your curating a bike of superior style. I have a bikesdirect bike and with just a few bucks on new handlebars and tires I think I have a very nice bike. it was under $350 including buying a new set of gatorskins. I also have a converted singlespeed mountain bike I use for hauling groceries and trips to the store that cost me $200 total to put together including an air zound, new tires, fenders, and a rear basket.

$500 would be pushing it, but it may be possible.

What would my options be then?

because then people could tell you that your options would REALLY open up if you had another hundred and could buy something in the 600 range.

local lbs sells pakes for about 450 out the door(so around 400 pre tax). that's a good bike. if your local shops aren't doing good deals then i'd get an iro, or a 300 dollar bikesdirect bike and spend the 100 difference on getting it built at a shop since a lot of parts need to be greased, tightened, and checked.

Id say buy the BD bike and spend the $100 difference on tools and learn to do it yourself.

i'd have a hard time sending a new guy on his way with a hundred bucks worth of tools and the interwebs to fix his own bike. I did that at first and most of my techniques leave a lot to be desired.

i hang around a lot at the local shop and the owner lets me use his stands and tools when there isn't much business. he gives me pointers and tells me how to do some of the procedures i don't know how to do.

the bike build shouldn't really cost a hundred, maybe 70. When you pay for it, tell the mechanic or whoever you want to watch so you can learn how to do the maintenance yourself. if they say no, take your business elsewhere. go to harbor freight and pick up a set of metric allen wrenches, metric open end wrenches (you'll especially need a good 15mm), and at the bike shop get some tire levers, chain tool, and a pump. that'll cover a huge majority of what you'll need to do. (that's actually closer to 60 bucks in tools, but about half of that is the floor pump and chain tool. floor pump is essential, and you won't need a chain tool often if you have a quick link)

I have or have access to any tools that aren't bike-exclusive.

I live in Orange County (hipsterville), everything at a LBS is overpriced, especially for SS/Fixed.

My guy at the LBS recommended a phat phixie.

i know its my first post, but i have been reading around alot and honestly I keep coming back to this bike. Granted i dont know much about ss and i come from bmx. But it seems like a decent bike to me and i think im gonna go for it.

Also like the charge plug... looks great
i am staying away from hi-ten and aggressive track geo.... and its my first bike besides a bmx. honestly riding with my ass in the air like that is a little awkward for me considering im so used to standing up. thanks

I've seen a lot of Phat Phixies going on CL in LA pretty cheap. As I said with my previous post Winnie, they do ship and you can get a Madison for a little bit more then 400 shipped. or 520 you can get a Jamis Sputnik shipped.

You still haven't defined what "decent" is. What are you going to use the bike for? There are literally tons of options. Be more specific about what you want.
