Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

ever had chain problems

Hi, im designing a chain device for my project at college. To help me with my research i would be grateful if you could tell me about any problems youve had with the chain coming off, or rattling around and causing damage.

What type of biking do you do?
If you ride with a chain device which one would you recomend?
Have you ever had trouble whilst using a particular chain device?
Do your trousers ever get caught in the chain?
Has the chain ever caused damage to the bike with or without a chain device?
Have you ever had trouble fitting a chain device?
Have you ever found that chain tensioners cause the chain to snap?

if you can give me any information regarding problems youve experianced then i would be most grateful.

Many thanks, J

Bikes: Richey Everest, Supercomp, Richey custom handbuilt Road, and others.

By chain device do you mean a chain tool? a compact anvil and press for removing the pin in a chain link.

or do you mean something else?

Bikes: Redline Mono-cog converted to BMX cruzer, 79 Peugeot single speed, Fuji s12-s single speed, Centurion Ironman single speed (see a pattern?)

Perhaps you could design a chain tensioner for standard forward facing drop outs. I often hesitate taking my rear wheel off becaue it is such a pain to retignten everything. Now on my BMX cruiser with tensioners it is no prob.

When I put my bike in the car I take out the front and rear wheel. With the rear out the chain sages and puts grease marks on whatever the bike is laying on.

A snap in axel spacer and chain tensioner with a chain tray made from plastic would be sweet.

what about using an old hub and cog with a quick release?

if you used a hook shaped piece of metal with a hole for the axle in the long arm and a threaded bolt in the bottom of the hook, could it clip over the rear of the dropout and tension against it.....go to go to the workshop...back in a couple of days......

Bikes: Rustbuckets, the lot of them.

The biggest problem chain device I've ever used is a derailer.

Tomity Toshihiko (fg#1124) is a keirin and track racer from Japan who also runs his own store (I think) and designs bicycle parts. I saw this device on his site that his company makes, looks like what you are talking about:
chain hook
