Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Bikes: 1986 Fuji Allegro 12 Spd; 2015 Bianchi Kuma 27.2 24 Spd; 1997 Fuji MX-200 21 Spd; 2010 Vilano SS/FG 46/16

Started to think about how neat an idea it was to have the brake on the cranks like that, but it can't be any more effective than a coaster brake ? Basically a rear wheel brake, lock ups and skidding in a panic, still only about 25 % of the braking. A front brake caliper or disc still makes more sense to me. Although I will admit it almost had me on-line locating & pricing one out.

Oh. the original question, SS/FG because I wanted a bike that didn't have all the complexities of a road bike, yet had the relative speed of one with enough GI that was neither too weak nor overwhelmingly too strong.

I ride one because it's fun and makes me feel jolly on the inside.

Isn't that what any bicycle should make us feel?

For some reason, what Vixtor said seems almost magical to me.

Well stated.
