When I ride in Japan I rock my wifes old junior highschool helmet. Its basically a piece of plastic the shape of a baseball hat and I doubt it would do anything in a crash. there is no foam or anything like that.. looks cool though! All the serious cyclist there ie: People who have road bikes usally wear helmets and ride on the rode. All the other "cyclists" don't.
I agree with carleton about it feeling weird at first and feeling right soon after. I won't ride my road of fixed gear without helmet/cap/gloves but BMX or cruiser I just rock a tuque.. (yeah i probly shouldn't...)

I bought it to race in. I figure if I can't go fast, the very least I can do is look like I'm going fast It's to keep the fans happy.
...by "fans", I mean fan.

Sure, some helmets look cooler than others. Hell, some might be more effective than others. But when I see riders with helmets, I don't say, "Hey, you're older than 12. Take that thing off, it's ugly!"
And just a BF rookie mistake to get on the bad side of BF vets (Scrod, Vix and dsh, to name a few). And ya hate to see that.

Am I the only one that thinks helmets look kinda cool?
They never struck me as dorky. (Except the ones they make for kids....bright metallic neon colors with that huge white foam around the bottom).
But I always thought the road/racing inspired helmets looked pretty cool.

Sorry to hear about your accident, sounds pretty heavy. Especially being a father.
I just picked up this helmet from a sale table for $75.
It is a 2008 model Giro E-2. Mountain bike helmet but it is flat black/carbon and looks great WITHOUT the visor

sssshhhh.... for those that don't want to wear a helmet let them do so.... What's the downside? Number one, I don't know them and number two, organ donation... It's the brakeless with no skill people that bother me. The type of people that even if they had 2 brakes, a helmet and a coaster set up would go against traffic down the middle of a tollway. I feel sorry for those they are likely to be killed by due to their own stupidity. Darwin award winners are funny when you read about them, not so funny when you are in the story with them.

Just so yers know I got the Bern Brentwood, bit weighty and hot and stinky as all hell in the Japanese summer but worn every day since buying it, even riding the shopping bike with the kid on the back every morning. Totally happy with the helmet, feel naked without it now. Good moral to the story, get something you're comfortable with for whatever reasons, right or wrong 'cos it doesn't matter how good the helmet is if you don't wear the thing.
And thanks for the ideas and advice.
