So, I lay to rest fears of getting spanked by the very people who make me enjoy the simplicity of a single speed. While this group ride was in no way a race, there was a defined fast, mild and slow group. After hanging with the leader of the fast group for the whole 30 miles (should have been 25, but we wanted more), and us not actually racing, me and the leader kind of got into it a little (racing) towards the last 3-4 miles, and on the hilly last mile, I dropped him on the last climb, rocketing down the the other side and into the winery. The group that went only 20 miles was just entering when I was. After the ride, the myriad of questions took place: "Is that a track bike?" "Did you build that by yourself?" "You did 30 miles with one gear??". To which the answers are: "Not quite", "I had help from a good friend", and "obviously faster than your leader". The only problem all day was having to piss in some tavern with some unhappy locals (11:00am on a sunday morning) unwilling to tell me where the bathroom was, and the winery was closed.
