That was my plan this year. :|
Then work piled up, and we're short people. Instead of leaving early, I'm working 10 hours a day. Yay for salaried positions.
Maybe next season I guess.

Our races are typically Tues/Wed/Fri nights. Sometimes there are events on the weekend, but they don't happen often. They have advanced training, but only for cat 3+. Novice sessions are Saturdays. I've done a bunch of those, and at this point sometimes intervals on the roadie help me more than they do.

3.5 hours each way! Now that is dedication.
I'm sure if I "race" it'll be more for fun and not for real competition so I definitely wouldn't want to drive 7 hours to race.

I have seen some STRONG and FAST racers come from the FG scene and kick butt on the race scene. TwoTone from Atlanta (Twotoneatl.com) is one of them.
I love seeing his pictures from the velodrome; he beasts it out and helped to convince me to give track a try (along with Jaytron, of course).
Also, anyone who has a velodrome anywhere near them should give it a try!! It's SO MUCH FUN and you meet a ton of really awesome people to play bikes with.
