Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Another wheelset thread

Whatsup.. Yes, I'm another newbie to the forum with a redundant question.. but I feel like I'm still missing something after reading a lot of the other wheelset threads. A lot of people are asking for stuff based on budget or looks.. Which is totally justifiable.. I guess I just don't totally understand the difference in the specs involved in the wheels and how they would benefit me. Stuff like "700cc"..

Anyway, I'm asking because I'm going to be building out a track bike this winter.. I thought it would be fun to have a ride other than my road bike. I live in a walk up in brooklyn so I'm hoping to find something lightweight but durable.. and based on the frame I'm getting.. A silver color option is ideal.

I've been checking out ellipses and deep-vs (mostly because I keep seeing everyone rave about them on here..).. but dont totally get why those 2 are the most popular/have to offer.

Thanks in advance for the help / putting up with another wheelset thread

Well, deep v's are popular 1. because they are real hip and give you street cred and 2. because if they are taking abuse (potholes, perhaps tricktrack type ****, they are stronger than some box section rims) then they are preferred. Velocity's and Wienmanns both offer a silver finish and I feel as though both are good rims, but the velocity's are more $.

700c is the standard wheel size for road and track bikes.

Deep Vs come in a lot of colors. Ellipses are kinda serious racing gear. Both are pretty expensive.

I'd recommend Formula hubs laced to SunRims or something. Cheap, pretty good quality, and very durable if built and trued right.

Thanks for the replies. I suppose another question is.. Whats up the deep-vs. They seem to be more extruded than most other wheels.. Not sure I love that look.. Is it a style or necessity in relation to the road? As for the ellipse, I probably won't be racing anytime soon.. Definitely don't need another bike related injury

Is it safe to say that if you get a decent hub and rim.. A bike shop will take care of the rest?

milkcratebasket - what wheelset are you selling?

I sent you a pm.

Generally around here an LBS will charge, a buck a spoke, 50 bucks each wheel to build, + the cost of your rim, hub, cog, lockring, tubes and tires.
Im sure the wheel build charge varies on location but not too much.
