Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

the languages are similar, but tibetan is still spoken very widely, though the dialects are mutually incomprehensible...
most likely what you have tattooed on you is central lhasa dialect tibetan, but that all depends on the region of tibet that the monk who wrote the book is from...as far as i understand it the alphabets are still pretty much the same for each dialect the differentiation is on pronunciation, use of honorifics, and grammar usage.

I'd love to talk with any of you on here that are into indo-tibetan studies, I'm a south asian studies dork and will be working in this field for the rest of my natural born life
I have vowed to learn as much about India/Tibet/Nepal as I can over the next 4 months. Been web searching, and book shopping. Any essentials that I should know about? When I go in February, I will probably be based out of Bangalore or Goa, but I intend to visit many areas, bathe in the Ganges, hike (MTB?) Himalayan foothils, get down with Buddha's bad birthplace, etc. I also intend to spend as little money doing so as is possible without getting Cholera. So yeah, umm... anything you have to say about these places is welcome.

This thread kicks my ass all over the place.

well culture and religion are woven together very tightly in tibet, nepal, and india,so you'll definitely want to try and learn what you can so that you'll understand the things you're visiting, as well as the significance they have for the people of these countries.

learn their cultural norms as best as you can so that you can blend in a bit better than the average traveller.

read up on high altitude sickness, things you might be prone to since you'll be in a completely different environment, expect to get sick

just prepare yourself as much as possible, but when you arrive, no matter how prepared you are, bet on the fact that you'll still be in for a huge culture shock
