$300 for cranks?
What kind of crankset should i get for a 6 mile commute for under $300
|
andels
6 mile commute is nothing. you could literally walk. seriously, get some kazane or andel or pake or origin8. why commute on something more expensive? |
You can pretty much get anything you want for $300. I have no preference between Sugino 75s, Dura Ace, and SRAM Omniums.
$300 on cranks for a 6 mile commute is pretty overkill, but then again I have Omniums on my daily. What's the rest of your setup? Why don't you take some extra money and put it towards some nicer wheels/saddle/bars or something? |
Haha For a 6 mile commute $60 cranks will do you just fine
Origin 8 EighthInch |
Nothing else to spend my money on.
It gets pretty windy at the beach in the morning what wheels are good for that? |
aerospokeszzzzz
|
Super Duper Deep V's act as bike sails. Get some low-pro rims

And by the way if you have $300 to spend on cranks....what did you spend on your frame????
|
four aerospokes
plus a pizza concept |
or should i save up and get rid of my schwin madison..
but what would i get |
Lots of options.
Campy Record Pista, Dura-Ace, FSA Carbon, SRAM Omnium. |
sell the madison and buy a FA18 hornet
|
You're going to put $300 cranks on a $400 bike? Does not compute.

The thing is my friend just gave me his bike and took his cranks back to make another one so I have money to buy cranks.. Or i can just sell the frame and buy another good one but i dont know what |
Spend a couple hours searching around this forum to see what's popular. You should find quite a bit. Read some reviews, etc. Then get back to us about how to blow $300.
If you really want to stick with the Madison, I suggest lowering your price range to something around $80-120. A few popular options around this range are: - Andel square taper - SRAM S300 - Sugino Messenger The Madison is not a bad frame and many people on this forum swear buy it. If it fits you and your needs, keep it. Use $300 towards better parts (don't blow it all on a crankset), and if/when you feel like moving on to a better frame, you can take the nice parts with you. |

but sure I'm willing to attempt to sell my frame, buy a cheap ass crankset, and buy a better frame. |
honestly i'd find a bike co-op that has used road double cranksets
even if you have to buy a bb to respace the crank spindle, it would still be a $15 fix or so to a problem that really isn't worth fixing. unless he had ridiculously nice parts on his madison, it's not worth putting 80 dollars into with pake cranks. get some ebay auction specials for 40 bucks or something cheap and used. |

if you're going to list $350 cranks as a joke, leave the omniums out of it.

yup, livid.
|
You're not going to notice a difference in performance between $300 track arms and $40 used road arms on a 6 mile commute. My suggestion is to spend the money where you will notice the difference. i.e. saddle, wheels, tires, handlebars/tape, etc. Or invest toward your comfortable retirement or something; don't let the money burn holes in your pockets.
p.s. or you can accessorize! Do you have a nice set of lights? How about a nice rain/wind jacket? Spoke cards? Holga 120N? |
Is this thread for real?
|
Sell me your Madison, and but a pogo stick. It's easier on your knees than skidz.

Don't get me wrong, I think the OP is dumb.
But it's pretty hilarious that people are saying "6 MILES IS WAY TOO SHORT TO FEEL THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HIGH END TRACK CRANKS AND A CHEAP ROAD DOUBLE". Because I'm pretty sure most track events are shorter than 6 miles, and I'm pretty sure super stiff cranks are most noticeable in all-out sprints regardless of how long your commute is. So, if anything, super stiff cranks make more sense for a 6 mile commute than a 20 mile commute, because you could possibly hammer that much harder for the whole 20 minutes it takes to go 6 miles. |
|
Truly, the only logical choice for a budget fixed gear frame.
Although for my money, I think this is a good option as well: http://cgi.ebay.com/TRUVATIV-HAMMERS...item25603d9f1e Will required some frame modifications but any frame builder can probably do them for less than $1,000. |
