Rear Hub for Surly Cross-Check

What are some recommendations for a fixed hub that will fit the wide spacing of the Surly Cross-Check frame? My LBS is telling me that I have to use the White Industries ENO.

Bull. Tell them to put some spacers on the hub axle, beneath the lock nuts, they may need to replace the axle with a wider one. Or if you're daring, you can cold set the frame down to 120mm and use it without spacers.

um...Surly too. Their hubs would work. Fo sheezy...
Sounds like you LBS needs their ass kicked. Nothing like pushing a hgher-dollar sale. Firebomb them.

Why would you run a Surly hub on a Surly bike?

And I think my Surly was 120mm, which probably wouldn't work on one of the Surly MTBs...

I'd go with spacers. Not sure if I'd let the LBS put them on or not...

The Crosscheck is spaced 132.5mm so you can run a road or MTB hub. But any track hub (120mm) could be spaced up to 130, be it Surly, Suzue, or other.

"Our Gnot-rite spacing (132.5mm) allows either 130mm road or 135mm MTB hubs (this is in regards to the dropouts on the Cross Check)."
That being said:
"We also make a 120mm spaced rear and a 135mm spaced rear with freewheel threading on one side and fixed gear/lockring threading on the other (this is in regards to the Surly hubs)."
Why pay for an ENO when there is a more frugal and suitable option?

Interesting. I'd still go with a spaced up track hub so that if I ever got a frame with true track spacing, I could respace it and fit in in there. Go with a 130mm flip-flop and you can only do road conversions (which may be just fine with you, I don't know).

The more options, the better, IMHO.

my opinion completely - ride track/streettrack on a track-spaced(120mm) frame, but the thread starter is looking for something for a CrossCheck, not a 'in the future' track frame. Hence my recommendation. Mating Surly to Surly is a win/win also here as you know they have set them up like this.
Just my $0.02

Yes, I read the same thing, I just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing something obvious. I don't have any experience selecting specific components. Thanks for the help.

When in fixie mode, I run a Kogswell hubset on my Cross Check. Has worked well for me...

Another vote for the Surly hub w/130 spacing. Get the fixed/fixed version and you will still be able to fun a freewheel if needed/wanted.

im REALLY blown away that a bike shop would tell you this. this kind of lack of knowledge should send up red flags to never go back to that shop. really.

Seconded - Kogswell hub are really nice, and cheap too - see a review here.

Does your crosscheck have vertical dropouts? If so then they are heading in the right direction. I just checked the Surly web site and the crosschecks there have a horiz dropout but I swear I've seen them with a vertical one. I could be wrong.

I don't have the Cross-Check. I will be buying the frame new so I assumed it would have horizontal dropouts like the one on the site. I guess if it did have vertical drop-outs at one point that might explain why the LBS thinks I need the special hub.

If you get the one with horiz dropouts you will be fine will all the hubs mentioned above.

the one with the vertical drops is the long haul trucker. its a bit beefier than the cross-check, for fully loaded touring.
