- A collection of vintage tank tops
- A few pairs of super skinny, skin tight jeans (extra points if they're expensive designer brands)
- Scissors to cut said jeans into short shorts
- A few pairs of Toms shoes (no socks)
- A collection of NOS / vintage cycling caps
- Any messenger bag (extra points for large bag size to contents ratio)

Take care of these basics and you'll be looking the part, even before having to buy a sweet fixie. That way, you start earning cred around the local coffee shops while you try to convince the folks to get you a sweet FULL NJS track bike (accept nothing less) for your birthday.

Sonofa...is it acceptable to use a piece of glass you found with some freegans to cut your jeans? I don't mind blowing hundreds of dollars on clothes, but there are too many scissors in the world.

I actually recommend tearing the jeans with your hands, because it will make the edges more ragged and accelerate the fraying. The more frayed and battered your jorts are, the longer you have been riding.
