cheaper to buy a brand new ready made bike from a store? i disagree
by scanning ebay and buying the cheapest parts you can find and finding an old road bike in a dump/rubbish pile out the front of someones house you can build up an 'acceptable' fixed gear bike for under $200

i'm not saying for this money you'll have a fabulous quality bike but it's something you'll have built for yourself, you'll know how it works and you'll know what you like and dislike when it comes to upgrading later... also you get some experience on cheap materials so if you break something in the beginning it wont be so bad money wise

While this is entirely possible, the time involved in trolling the internet waiting for that 'great deal' to come up on the parts you need to finish, just to get the thing up and running... Plus you might have to deal with issues like, "Well I need a stem, but the only one they have left (at amazing price) is 120mm, and I don't feel like stretching that far or running my bars backwards to compensate.." ?
Or if you get lazy and go to the lbs, prices shoot up way before you realize what's going on..

Unless you're going the route of buy a wheelset, get a new chain and run it off a multi speed crank, and the rest of the bike is complete from wherever.. Then you get cost of bike + ~100ish?

Nah... It's way easier than that. You just have to get your dad/mom to go and tell them how neat they think the dude's bike is. Five minutes later you'll find it abandoned in an alley. Done.

After a while I get your point, so I guess I can concede. I don't like how he gives no information at all though lol.

Get some tatz and huge pluggs first.

Man here in Seattle it is much cheaper to build a Fixie than buy one of those ****ty low end pre-made pieces of crap. But we have a nice little store called Recycled cycles!

Other than that it's web trolling and buying crappy parts for you.

Shopping list:
- Some sick ink (extra points if it's on your calves. Double bonus if bike related)
- Massive ear piercings
- A collection of vintage tank tops
- A few pairs of super skinny, skin tight jeans (extra points if they're expensive designer brands)
- Scissors to cut said jeans into short shorts
- A few pairs of Toms shoes (no socks)
- A collection of NOS / vintage cycling caps
- Any messenger bag (extra points for large bag size to contents ratio)

Take care of these basics and you'll be looking the part, even before having to buy a sweet fixie. That way, you start earning cred around the local coffee shops while you try to convince the folks to get you a sweet FULL NJS track bike (accept nothing less) for your birthday.

naa you don't gotta troll for parts...just gotta have the connects. make a friend who rides fixed, pretty sure he'll eventually wanna build another bike then just gett it for hella cheap ( you can also make friends with the other "hipsters").... i got a clean motobecane messenger + somax gold rims + pake crankset + toe clips + new seat .. $200. just gotta network mayn
