I think it's just the cranks. I can just press on the cranks without the wheels or pedals moving, and itll creak.

7600 are JIS short taper. Neither pure ISO nor pure JIS.

Take the chain off. Can you still make it creak?

Squirrelli 04-01-11 03:20 PM

My friend bought the 110mm Miche ISO bb to go with the 7600, no problem so far and the chainline is pretty damn straight.

RidinSF 04-03-11 06:17 PM

Sorry. Been really busy. I'll get the chain off tomorrow. I'm pretty sure it would still creak without a chain, though. Tightening the cranks seem to make it creak less, but it comes back, nevertheless. A mech at a bike rental place said to grease the spindle. He's crazy, right?

RidinSF 04-05-11 01:47 PM

Cranks still creak without chain. :/

macnab 04-05-11 09:46 PM

ok, so you know it's not the chain ring bolts. Go to work on the BB to crank arm interface, check the BB while you are in there.

Grease a splined spindle, don't grease a square spindle.

My UN54 is making a lot of noise too. I bet it's the damn plastic cup moving around, at least that's what it sounds like. I'm going to take it apart and slather it and the BB threads with a thick coating of synthetic grease. I'll probably end up buying one of those metal cups for it eventually. Shimano should include a metal cup and increase the price to cover it. The plastic cup is enough reason to buy another brand instead.

I been having some issues with creaking in what I presume is my BB and I posted a thread about it yesterday. Lot of good advice, check it out :

So hard to tell where creaks come from, could be anything so never hurts to check everything.

Scrodzilla 07-13-11 09:34 AM

Clem - the plastic non-drive side cup found on UN54s aren't as problematic as most people would like to think.

yummygooey 07-13-11 09:39 AM

I haven't had any problems with mine. A buddy has cracked one on removal, though.

EssEllSee 07-13-11 09:55 AM

I have one and been using it for 2 weeks with no problems. I have heard mixed reviews about them though. Unfortunately I can't find any other JIS BB's with 110mm :(

i finished putting my new bike together with sugino 75 BB and cranks, it creaks when i put pressure onto the drive train. i have removed everything (cranks, chain, bb), wipe down and regrease and retorque. still creaks. could it be the frame? sugion 75 bb and cranks are quiet on my 722ts. i took my seatpost and saddle off the 722ts for a test ride, now i hear creaking from the saddle also. whats going on?!

yummygooey 07-13-11 10:06 AM

Chainring bolts?

polobreaka 07-13-11 10:10 AM

oh yea those have been re tightened.

yummygooey 07-13-11 11:15 AM

I think Shimano is made by Tange. At that price I doubt it's much of a step up in terms of the bottom bracket itself (is probably the same BB), but at least with this product you will get an metal cup.

Although it says for use with Andel cranks, it will work with any crank needing 110mm JIS square taper. They are very inexpensive, excellent quality, have metal cups and include crank mounting bolts.

Damn, wish I would have seen that before I bought my Shimano :(
