Nope, the active ingredient in oven cleaner is sodium hydroxide, caustic soda, lye. That's the active ingredient.

You're correct about the Nair, but oven cleaner doesn't contain thioglycolates (or if it does, it's not the primary mechanism by which it works). Nair *does* contain calcium hydroxide, but that will be substantially less reactive than sodium hydroxide and is also present in much lower concentrations than the sodium hydroxide in oven cleaner.

Bottom line: the mechanism by which they work maybe similar, but just as using a 2.4GHz phone or WiFi card is not the same as sticking a microwave oven over your head, Nair is not the same as oven cleaner. Don't mix and match kids.

Actually, I think I have my reactivity backwards. Down and left is more reactive than up or right (on the periodic table). Though Calcium is below Sodium, Sodium is to the left of Calcium. It's been too long since I've done chemistry and ionic bonds, so I can't actually figure it out for sure anymore.

Still, the concentrations are quite different. Soap is also made from lye (or at least used to be), but that's also not the same as oven cleaner though it too works similarly.

Lower and more left is the stronger cation, up and right is the stronger anion (theoretically flourine, but its generally impractical or impossible to use flourine in a reactive ionic compound).
...IIRC. It's also been a white since inorganic chem. Organic is a bit fresher.

Back to the toast.
You could toast the bread normally, then place it on the seat of your 'fixed gear or single speed' bicycle and squash it wafer thin by sitting on it.

PS. You could probably sell it for a fortune on this forum of bicycle seat sniffers.

On kitchen mishaps...

Don't use your mother's coffee grinder to mince garlic. She'll get pissed. My brother made this error, not me. I like to think I'm more bright than that. Instead, I would do things like fill the (aluminum) saucer sled with lighter fluid and throw matches at it (and when realizing that this was dangerous, I'd open the garage door and kick the sled into the driveway). Fortunately mom never used the garage, so she never saw the big black spot on the ceiling. IT takes a bright kid to do dumb things where mom will never look.

On a side note…

How do you people find the time to read all of these discussions? I’m not just talking about bikeforums in general (I gave up on that the day after I joined), but just the ss/fg threads. I realize that not doing dishes might save you a bit of time, but still, there’s a lot o’ words in here.

I read fast. I type fast. I bike fast.

I find time to read a lot of the blogs as well...
