Do you guys know how if you have a slice of bread, you can make it really skinny by smooshing it with your thumbs and fingers? You know, make it flat. When I was little, I thought it tasted better that way. Sometimes I rolled it into little balls. ANYWAY, DO NOT TOAST IT. IT WILL CATCH ON FIRE, even on toaster setting 3!!! Luckily, I'm used to running for the smoke detector to disconnect the battery anyway, so neighbors were not woken up, however, can't get rid of the stench!!!

Pls advise

schwinnbikelove 10-28-04 05:38 AM

Setting 1 doesn't toast it at all. I'm afraid to try 2!

skitbraviking 10-28-04 05:41 AM

Thanks for the tip. I'll never do that now.

schwinnbikelove 10-28-04 05:44 AM

You know, not a problem at all. I'll do lots to save you cool ass people this pain, agony and defeat.

Rock on, doods!

jjsinglespeed 10-28-04 05:44 AM

I left a pot of beans on and forgot about em once.
Had to paint wash the curtains and shampoo the rugs
so I guess you got off lucky. Toast a little coffee in a pan (no water) it will help get rid of the smell====JJ

schwinnbikelove 10-28-04 05:49 AM

Thanks for the advice, JJ. I wish I had coffee. Would Pepsi work instead?

You know, setting 1.5 works good if you don't smoosh the bread as much. You can make pretty designs, because where the raised areas remain, the bread toasts.

You could also toast it like a grilled cheese without the cheese probably. The trick to that is melting the butter first. The bread gets really nice and coated that way.

familyman 10-28-04 06:01 AM

I assume you're using a conventional pop up toaster?
I think you'd have more controll with a toaster oven. It's all about controll.
My favorite toaster has to be my Hot-Diggity-Dogger. Cooks two hotdogs and toasts two buns to perfection. So yummy.

HereNT 10-28-04 06:03 AM

It doesn't require dishes too often. Just dedicate that pan to nothing but toasted bread, and wipe it out after each use. Try not to burn the butter - that helps too...

progre-ss 10-28-04 06:10 AM

Well, I guess I'll have to cross "smushing a slice of bread very thin and toasting it to see if it will burn" off of my list of things to do. I've already done the "boil hotdogs and forget about them until the water boils dry and the hotdogs catch fire and smoke up the whole house when I was 10", "light a paper airplane on fire, pretending it just got shot by the Red Baron and let it fly through the living room and burn a hole in the carpet" and " pretend I'm Bo or Luke Duke and put my key in the ignition of the General Lee (which in fact was the electrical socket of those poles in the parking lots that you plug your block heater into during the winter) and get the shock of my life".

SSSwede 10-28-04 06:12 AM

During my poor stident youth we used the breadtoaster to toast several different dishes, for example fish sticks (worked well) slices of bloodpudding (not that well), none caught fire although a stuck fish stick may stink...

Woops, I deleted my "complaining about doing dishes" post, which makes this thing you said seem kinda funny.

HereNT 10-28-04 06:23 AM

Uh, why did you do that? Did you buy a dishwasher in the last 10 min?

I have to do dishes today because I am broke, so I must cook if I want to eat anything today. Grrr... At least tomorrow is payday, because I'm going to finish this bottle sitting here.

I just decided I didn't like it. That's funny-dishwasher.

Payday, finish bottle, correlation is what?

I hate not having dishes left to cook with. I usually find different ways to cook things then-i.e. nothing too fancy, but like microwaving corn instead of in my favorite pan on the stove. Sometimes I just don't eat as much.

THIS HAS EVERYTHING TO DO WITH MY FIXED GEAR BICYCLE. he he

Correlation is that I've rationed well, and will be able to pick up another bottle only a few hours after work tomorrow...

I am a big fan of tinfoil and frozen pizzas (tinfoil is recycled) as a dish-free food. Coworkers have suggested that I should use paper plates, but I really don't like that idea.

For corn, there's often a guy across the street from me selling cobs in a booth by the grocery store.

YOU POSTED THIS IN THE WRONG FORUM! MAY THE MODERATORS MOVE YOUR POST TO TRAINING AND NUTRITION!!!!

1) They used to use coca cola to clean ovens
2) If you put a dirty penny in McDonalds BBQ for around 24 hours, it will come out clean. Or so some people say.

Shiznaz 10-28-04 07:30 AM

I once made those flat toastie things for a fancy cocktail party my parents were having back when I was younger. I toasted them to perfection in the oven and then topped them with various delicacies. They were recieved excellently!

Moonshot 10-28-04 07:47 AM

Cuban pressed sandwiches are the bomb! If you get a chance to try one.

I'm always burning biscuits in the oven because I get impatient about letting the thing preheat.

FWIW, don't try heating corn tortillas in the toaster, either. They slump, and ignition happens almost simultaneously with the telltale smoke. Burned corn smells awful, and you look stupid standing outside your apartment shaking the flaming discs from the toaster.

auroch 10-28-04 08:14 AM

my auto shop book used to say to clean battery terminals with coca cola.
i actually read my auto shop book...i'm such a friggin' nerd.

Thats why I use the old tongs and burner method when I heat up my little discs of mexican goodness.

SD Fixed 10-28-04 08:48 AM

Bagel in micro wave: 30 seconds.

Mini bagel, much less.

Many mini bagels: mind caculation said two minutes.

Fire in microwave: Priceless.

jeff williams 10-28-04 09:18 AM

Why does raisin toast have a lower flash point than regular toast?

I always burn the first 2 slices.

I heard that Coke will do the same thing to the penny, rust, grime and all. I'm craving a Coke all of a sudden. Thank God I don't drink as much of that stuff as I used to. Maybe I'll replace my cravings for Coke with a bottle of Jenna Jameson;)
