It's not an SLR and you can't treat it as such. Writing such a long post just because it's not as good as your SLR makes you look irresponsible for not knowing that you were essentially downgrading. There is definitely a bit of a shutter lag but that's what you get when you shoot with a point and shoot. One of my friends owns a G11 and I'm always impressed with his pictures. That guy has a true gift. I actually loved my G10 and it gave me some pretty amazing shots. The S95 is quite amazing as well.

This is one of my favorite pictures that I've taken and I've shot with the G10, Nikon F100, and Nikon D700.

+1

Comparing a PowerShot G series pro-sumer point and shoot to a SLR is comparing apples and oranges.

Here's the timing I had with SLRs

The ball-on-bat photo is one of the toughest in sports photography. One of the most rare is the broken bat. I got both :)

Oh, and this wasn't done with rapid fire 8fps shooting. 8fps isn't fast enough to catch this. Single shot is the only way.

EDIT:
I could almost get a ball on bat photo at will (assuming the batter made contact, haha). Here's another:

totally awesome!

Still hated the **** out of the G11. My fault for expecting SLR performance out of it? sure.

i only got it because i had the d700 and wanted a 'companion point and shoot.' which is what the g11 is highly lauded for...

turns out what i really wanted was an M9.

Freaking awesome shot, carleton!

I understand why someone would want to go with monochrome vs. color, I just don't like it when it's digital. I have seen some good digital black and what photos, but for the most part they're garbage. Maybe one day I'll like it.

This is what I was getting at, even if some people go black and white for "composition" purposes I just don't like it if it isn't film.

The reason why people *love* film so much is because of the quality of the grain. You can put a high quality film in a crap camera and still get nice grain texture in the print/scan.

With digital, your "film" is directly tied to the camera that you buy. So, the key is to buy a nicer camera that comes with a nicer sensor (film) then you will get much nicer digital noise (grain).

I considered buying a 7D, but came to the same conclusion.

The best camera is the one you have with you. The smaller, the better.

Disclaimer: I'm a former professional photojournalist and sports photographer. I've used everything from pocket cameras to 400mm f2.8 and lots in-between. My favorite photos are the ones that were taken with small basic cameras.

definitely a lot of truth in this. for like two years i only shot medium format film and my cameras spent a lot of time at home. lately i've been using my olympus XA which is a tiny 35mm rangefinder that looks like a $10 wal-mart camera and i love it. and it's with me almost 24/7.

The smaller the better, that way you will have it with you more often. One of the things I didn't like about the Canon G10 was that it was bulky. Lots of great features, but tough to put in pants pocket. Jacket yes, pants no. It's a great learning tool, though because it has manual mode.

This is why I liked the Ricoh GR. It easily fit in jeans.

Yeah... I love shooting with my SLRs and Leica, but I don't always want to carry them. I like a nice pocket camera in my stash..ever since my Olympus Stylus Epic died, i've been thinking of getting one of these for my jeans pocket... or I might just get another epic..

I bought my wife one of those so she could take blurry pictures of irrelevant things. It takes nice pictures but it does have that annoying Canon lag while it decides what's best.

zoltani 04-14-11 04:39 PM

meh, I like my G10, fits nicely into my handlebar bag when touring.

Hmm.. I haven't had a digital p&s for a few years, I'd have thought they'd get that lag worked out by now.

thisisbenji 04-14-11 05:54 PM

The lag isn't to bad, I have an old Canon SD750, and I can time pictures perfectly with it. It lags exactly the same every single time, so i never miss a shot. I can time with it almost as well as on my SLR, you just have to think ahead a little.

My dad actually gave me a camera he bought a few years ago, a Canon SX100 IS. Anyone have experience with this?
