OEM 50mm wheels?

what do you guys think of these? I cant seem to find anything about them...

http://www.red2bicycle.com/products/...m-profile.html

for $160 it seems like a steal

youngandcurious 04-09-11 01:14 PM

Well they probaly weight 26 pounds

avner 04-09-11 01:27 PM

probably stupid like heavy. I'd avoid them if you care about the ride quality. If you just want to be ballin' then go for it. But the weight will slow you down on your acceleration and on your climbing.

i contacted them asking the weight. let's wait and see what they say. what's the acceptable weight when shopping for wheels?

youngandcurious 04-09-11 01:31 PM

Well velocties are kinda the standard wheel and a set laced to formulas weighs around 2200g

avner 04-09-11 01:40 PM

I looked it up, Each wheel is about 4lbs.

2200 is about 5lbs for a wheelset.
You can go a lot lower then that too. It depends. I rock b43's and they look cool. I definitely feel the extra weight climbing or starting from a stop. I don't mind it so much anymore but when I first got them and I had a fat tire, I nearly lost my mind and sold my bike I hated it so much.

I think you're on crack if you buy a rim that's heavier than 1600-170 grams for a SS if you're not 180+lbs, but that's just me.

Paulo Dourado 04-09-11 01:58 PM

i think i'll be getting the eightinch julian wheels then. only one less mm than the b43s, cheaper, has a brake track, and weighs in at ~2600g not too bad..

2600 grams = 5.73lbs..that is really bad. If you look at the rim weight of those things, they are 800 grams PER RIM! That means just 2 rims is heavier than most quality road bike rims with much heavier hubs! You might as well lace up some old steel rims for that much weight. Even cheap mountain bike 29er rims(29er=700c) come in under 2000 grams, and they are abused way worse than most SS wheelsets ever will be.

yummygooey 04-09-11 03:14 PM

Can you lace your own wheels? IRO hubs, FOER rims, etc... would make for a Deep V-ish weight.

I have DP 18s and while they're pretty strong rims, they're also pretty heavy... I think about 0.8lbs more than Deep Vs. That's a lot of rotational weight for your starts and stops.

well i need something with a braking sidewall, this is my first build so I cant lace much yet..

i actually do use my brake quite often still since I am still building up endurance in my leg muscles

rkd350z 04-10-11 01:18 AM

are you trying to jump 15+ stairs??

if not, don't even botter deep aero rims

cc700 04-10-11 01:32 AM

i put my b43s on and all of a sudden my bike felt like it just slipped through the air and accelerated SO much easier.

i mean it was like i was barely having to put any power through the pedals to get up to speed.

and then i remembered, oh wait i went from a 17t to a 19t when i changed wheels.

deep wheels look cool, that's about it. cheap ones will still be crap, probably even crappier than if they weren't deep.

That explains the bulging tires:
