Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Today I enjoyed having a little break from working on OPB's and got to work on one of my own as was so pleased that everything came together so smoothly... had to deal with a cottered crank conversion with an Italian bike but when I went through my spare parts found the right Italian spindle for the Stronglight.

Everything went really smoothly and it is always nice when you are working oin a 35 year old bike that does not have all it's parts seized up.

Also found an uber hard to find 7 series spindle in my bin of spindles that I did not know I had... these are needed to refit older raleigh cottered cranks with 76mm shells and are like hen's teeth.

Today I flipped the stem on the Earl and then lowered it 1 spacer. It's much different now, I'll see how I like it over the next few days.

In other news: I only fell once with the new Eggbeaters.

Today when I rode to work at 6:30 am it was already approaching 80 degrees. It will be in the high 90s with a 103 heat index for the ride home this afternoon. I was *this* close to not riding to work today but honestly, being on public transit when it's this hot is just as miserable, plus you're surrounded by stinky sweaty grumpy people.

Commuted on the fixed gear after putting in a lot of geared miles this weekend. My calf muscle was tight so I figured I would do a pedal stretch, forgetting that I couldn't coast. Doh! I can laugh at myself but I still felt like an idiot.

Then later down the road I saw a crow and squirrel fighting, that was awesome....squirrel won of course, and by that I mean he disappeared into a bush.

Hit the worst part of traffic both ways on hwy 530, saturday morning all the cars heading into the mountains and sunday all the cars coming back...headwinds sunday. But the mountain loop highway is killer, and the campsite was awesome. Felt good to ride a loaded bike again and to get some miles in.

Went out for a short ride to the park with the lady. My Cinelli gel tape started to come loose on the drops, so I think I'm going to rewrap them. Actually. I might splurge and be a dumbass and get some Lizardskins from Dave's shop, haha.

"For added ease of control, Shimano has integrated the brake lever and the shifter into one unit, allowing the rider to brake and shift without moving hand positions--an optimal feature for increased safety."

WHAT? When did they start doing this??!!

I remember the first time I did a test ride with those breaks/shifters was during my short stint working at the LBS.

"How do I... Hmm..
Uhh...

Whoa.
WHOA.

AWESOME."

decided to skitch off a car that pulled out of a parking space in front of me, as a 'cut me off i'll use your gas' gesture.

they sped off and it quickly turned into a 'roll/slide across the ground' gesture.

Every time I see the "I'm [famous cycling dude/chick] and I choose SRAM" commercial during cycling events, which is like 50 times per day, it makes me think I'd choose SRAM too if I could afford it. Also I like the scene at the end with the cyclist going over the pavé with the boop-beep-boop music.

/cool story bro
