Am having a love affair with my gas stove. However, I've been cheating on it with the dishwasher.

Never eat at my house.

Sunday provided the classic, "oh-no-what-have-I-gotten-myself-into" epic ride:

Even though it wasn't the plan today, I felt good enough that I rode the TimeLine from the Pier 11 in Manhattan up the Westside Greenway and kept going to the George Washington Bridge. Along the way I kept thinking, "hmmm, the Greenway feels bumpier than I remember."

When I reached the GWB and took a break - at that point I still felt good and was planning to continue up and over the bridge into NJ - I saw something weird with my front tire. Turns out that the bumpiness I felt on the way up was my front tire: The right sidewall? Bulged out and bubbly. I don't know what I hit, maybe one of the "speed bumps" in Brooklyn Bridge Park, maybe something else. But it held air. Solidly. Didn't deflate at all, so I knew the tube was at least in reasonable shape. I wasn't even going to attempt getting the tire off the rim and having it somehow blow-up in my face.

So I did the next stupidest thing and rode back to the ferry.

Got on the boat, rode it across to Brooklyn, rode through BB Park and home. The bike is here in the apartment. The sidewall is still bulged out. Still no deflation, still on the rim. I still can't believe that the tire held full pressure there during the whole ride. And I was hammering it during much of the trip uptown. The tire never left the rim.

Has anybody had problems with the Alex DC19 rim/700-32 Kenda Kwest combination? I don't think I over- inflated the tire, but maybe the gauge on my pump is inaccurate. I'm off to the LBS tomorrow or Tuesday to have the wheel inspected (possibly replaced) and the tube and tire replaced.

Why would you replace a wheel due to sidewall failure of a budget tire?

I don't intend to replace the wheel, but I trust the owner of my LBS. I'll change it if (and only if) he says that there's something wrong with the rim. Saying that, I doubt that there is a defect: Like you said, it's a budget tire. I'm thinking of going to Bontrager as an upgrade. I've also heard that Thick Slicks are pretty good. What's your recommendation for a good replacement?

i'd go with the thickslick, sounds like you do a lot of riding on rough streets.

I would bet a lot of money that your rim is fine.

I think you would win that bet

"Rough streets" is an understatement. Thanks for the recommendation.

So i think my phone screen cracked because of the heat today... it was supposed to be 90 here, and I was on astro turf, so we questimated 100 or so actual temps. And i left the phone in my back pack for like 3 hours. My thing of chapstick completely melted into a goo also. That was annoying

Bikes: yes

Yesterday, mini-me had his first ride in the bike seat. The Trek i was planning to build for the occasion wasn't ready, so we used my wife's Giant. The Weeride seat is freakin awesome and I'd recommend it to anyone.
Dude managed to keep his helmet on, and as you can tell by the last picture, seemed comfortable enough for his afternoon nap. Or he was just really bored by the whole thing.
