This makes a lot of sense.
Dura Ace and Ultegra wheels ride wonderfully and accelerate great- they have the spoke nipples at the hub.
It's another reason tubulars ride so well- the rim is lighter (and stronger).

Nagrom_ 11-05-12 10:36 PM

Precisely. It's pretty amazing how much of a difference it makes.

20 alloy nipples, weighing .31g each, so... just over 6 grams, has over 3.5x the influence on the moment of inertia than a >260g phil wood hub.

But if you move them to the hub, bam, gone. nearly nothing.

Interesting choice of brake lever placement. How's that working for you?

Mumonkan 11-06-12 12:28 AM

It was uncomfortable, i had to strain my wrists to grab the levers so I've moved the levers to the base bars. I'm thinking of taking them off altogether though.

TMonk 11-06-12 12:44 PM

note to self: don't spill a couple droplets of con nitric acid on ur arm

Leave them on the base bars if you ride it on the street. I tried riding brakeless here in SF for a few days, it's really no fun, I don't get why people do it. I just have a front brake, but it comes in real handy often enough that I'd feel stupid not having it when needed -- getting cutoff by a car, going down long steep hills and not wanting to kill my knees and/or rear tire... so many good reasons to keep at least one brake on your street-used FG.

Nagrom_ 11-06-12 01:07 PM

Run two cable doublers, and brakes on everything.

That'd be legit.

Cynikal 11-06-12 01:34 PM

Today this followed me home.

Today I realized that resistance was futile... we are Borg.

Oh, mama!

Could benefit from silver stem and shifters, though, IMO.

Cynikal 11-06-12 01:46 PM

Silver Cinelli stem and bars with non aero levers are wrapped and waiting.

Dannihilator 11-06-12 07:06 PM

Today I toyed around on the dmr and got phone/internet back. So, cable check, phone/net check, power: still on generator.

Mumonkan 11-06-12 08:17 PM

ouch dan, glad youre ok though

only lost power for a couple days here on the island

I contemplated taking my brakes off before 48-17 was easy to stop just by skidding. I put my 14t cog back on and the brakes are staying for sure. Current set up:

48/14? might want to add two more brake levers.

RGNY 11-06-12 09:03 PM

today's commute was 22F. six degrees lower than my lowest last year. small personal glories. forecast is for 20F tomorrow....

wife and i voted, then went for pho. little Vietnamese grandma patted me on the head for being the only white boy to ask for extra tripe and tendon.

found out that the 'World War Z' movie will suck bigtime. total reworking of the story to make it about one guy and changed shambler zombies to runners. not to mention the really bad cgi. will wait for Netflix, bummer. now i can go back to worrying about what George Clooney will do with the rights to one of my other favorite books ever, "Gates of Fire".

I worked at a voting poll, and got to skip school. I also installed my Crud Mk2 fenders.

EpicSchwinn 11-06-12 10:33 PM

Today, as a conservative, I'm actually kind of relieved. I dislike Obama but I think I would rather see a fresh crop of conservatives for 2016 than have Mitt run for president and likely run again as incumbent in 2016.

Picking between two unremarkable candidates for the lose.

Today at work I got unwittingly nailed from the side by a longboarder but 2 spokes and a beer later, good as new. Voted for a write in candidate after work, I hope I win!

jimmytango 11-06-12 10:57 PM

Four more years! Woo! And yes, I voted today.

Christie 2016
Corey Booker 2020 or 2024

Sad... to have to vote for the lesser of two nearly identical evils.

Mumonkan 11-06-12 11:28 PM

It felt a little flimsy, but I guess thats what it's supposed to do based on the website.

JohnDThompson 11-06-12 11:33 PM

Pulled a 16 hour shift working the polls after pulling a 13 hour shift yesterday at my "day job" in the hospital. Thanks to all you who voted!

Nice, that looks like it'll work a lot better. Definitely keep the brakes with that high ratio... almost 93 g" -- that's serious ****. I thought I was manly for rocking 79 g" on the street. What kind of hills do you see on that (if any)?
