my all city is a 55 with a 565 top tube and 100mm stem, but I have hoods on it now so I stretch slightly more than my previous setup, which was risers, and probably too cramped
both my 722s were 58 /57 TT with a 100mm stem

570-575mm top tube seems like a sweet spot for me. the thing is though, he didn't worry about my reach, he worried about the '55' part of it, which makes no sense at 6' to me, normally due to my long legs I have my seatpost higher than others my height. I hope he isn't concerned with standover

Obviously it wouldn't be bad, my all city is a tad smaller than I'd normally prefer but I prefer to make a bike grow instead of make one shrink

FWIW, I'm 6'1" with a 34" inseam and fit most comfortably on a 57cm frame (TT/ST). For that inseam length though it required a lot of seat post. I would agree that 55 sounds really small for someone your size.

I'm the other way around. Because I have arms like an ape and don't like a lot of saddle-to-bar drop, I actually prefer a frame that's a little too big. If I were to put hoods on either of my bikes though, I'd most likely be a little too stretched out with my current stems.

I've found that a 55-56cm top tube and 100-110mm stem is ideal and the extra cm of seat tube on my Gara extended the head tube just enough to get my s-t-b drop right where it should be.

If you were comfortable on your 58cm 722 with a 100mm stem, you'll need a 130mm stem and a lot of seatpost to ride a 55cm Gara and the bar drop will be huge. FWIW, my 58cm 722 is set up with risers and a 90mm stem (which is the only setup I've ever wanted to use on that bike). If I ever put drops on that bike, it would probably suck to ride.

Just a thought hamfoh -

Couldn't you take one of your current bikes that fits you well and do:
[current ST] + [current seatpost] - [dodici seat tube] = [length seatpost needed on dodici]

If you're gonna need some 300mm seatpost then look at the next size up.

I'd assume if you had a very different seat tube angle between the two bikes that might make your results moot.

had 3 pints of this last nite:

it made the first half of my 3hrs ride this morning a little rough, but i warmed up and got 'er done.

was feeling great by the end.

Finishing last night up with White Castle seemed like a good idea at the time.

hamfoh 11-15-12 12:31 PM

turns out the guy was riding a Dodici Special, but I looked and all the frames have the same geo chart it seems. I'm getting a Leggero fwiw, but it's the exact same geo chart as the Gara anyway says the site and the dude I'm talking to. 57 seems perfect for me with a 100mm stem based on previous bikes, or am I crazy?

and yeah, ever since my 725 snafu, I try to avoid the chode stem at all cost. I just hate the way the bike feels with that kind of stem and avoid it at all cost. I guess I've gotten used to the saddle to bar drop after all this time. The focus setup is pretty stretched out, so maybe that's helped.

to be fair about my 722 I rode it with risers and track drops only (and when I had track drops let's be honest, I was rarely in the drops), so I guess it's not the best judge of bike here. my big block is about perfect with hoods, but has a large saddle to bar drop. so 20mm up and 10mm out would probably do the trick.

edit: measured my fingertip to the stitch on the shoulder of my shirt. 27"

edit2: francesco why you make me nervous

Hello Kasey!Mine is a SPECIAL SL, it has a different geometry.
I have always used a 56/57 track frame, so i decided to go with a 57.
Result? I have to use a shorter stem and shorter seatpost height.
If i could go back, i would get a 55 HANDSDOWN!

Cheers
Francesco

Nagrom_ 11-15-12 01:28 PM

Have you used the fit calculator?

Went to class and on my way home nearly ran over a small dog that wanted to run out in front of me. Even with front brake and skidding it was a close call, the owner is lucky his dog isn't snapped in half right now. Hopefully my commute to work will be less eventful.

according to fitcalc (i recommend watching the vids) its to the bone that protrudes out on the top of your shoulder. Just poke around till you feel a nub

Nice Porter Waggoner avatar. Also, down in Louisville, don't you guys have Krystal instead of White Castle, or is that further South? I know you have Waffle House though. I could go for some scattered-smothered-covered right now...

Just measured mine for ****s and giggles. Tip to seam I'm 32.5", Wingspan is 81".

ddeadserious 11-15-12 02:09 PM

Measured mine too(to the seam of my shirt) and came with a hair over 30". I ride a 54 but I have short legs lol.

Here's a video from the Competitive Cyclist page on how to actually measure arm length:
#!
Came up with something like 27.5 inches this way. Maybe hamfoh really has t-rex arms.

Nagrom_ 11-15-12 02:14 PM

I guess I have short arms? 28.75"

EDIT: wait, I'm normal, that was using the fit calc method, so thats to my knuckles-ish. add like 4 inches to that.

I have long arms then.

Mumonkan 11-15-12 02:27 PM

its possible, im 5'10" and after doing mine solo and with help earlier this year i came out with ~23"

short legs, long torso, short arms, crane neck

hamfoh 11-15-12 04:57 PM

measured my left arm according to the video. 30" - so yeah, probably below average for my height

My tail light fell off on a ride at lunch today when I hit a nasty pothole way too fast, on a pretty busy street. I turned around and saw a pedestrian dude pick it up, look at it funny, then put it RIGHT BACK DOWN IN THE STREET. Then a car promptly ran it over and absolutely demolished it as I was about 10 feet away waiting to dart out and pick it up. I had to try so hard not to go ballistic on the dude, if you saw it fall and picked it up, can't you at least wait to hand it to me, or maybe put it on the curb if you're in that much of a hurry you couldn't wait 5 seconds? ****!
