im looking for more options besides a shim, like the 3ttt mutant stem. thanks!

anything else? just polling options i might not be aware of.

Scrodzilla 04-26-11 10:49 AM

Curious - why are you against using a shim and choosing from a vast plethora of available stems?

adriano 04-26-11 10:56 AM

i have a cinelli alter.

im not against it, but if there is a nice looking good quality 1 inch threadless stem out there then id rather do that than result to a shim. worse case scenario, i get a shim. but might as well see whats out there that im not aware of before doing that.

Scrodzilla 04-26-11 11:19 AM

Actually, an even worse-case scenario is that you fall into a swamp and get your legs chewed off by an alligator while being chased by a grizzly bear with a rocket launcher. But I see what you're saying.

Silly question, but what it the actual OD of a 1" threadless stem? Is is 22.2 mm or 25.4 mm. Was wondering as I have a idea for a project floatiing around in my head.

Integralter

LupinIII 04-26-11 12:28 PM

get a shim, go 31.8. all the good bars and stems are OS now anyways

muckymucky 04-26-11 12:57 PM

your first case scenario should be: the thomson shim, it's only $5, widely available
shimming 1" to 1 1/8" is not a "results to", its a "perfectly what you should do anyway" to.

guess what: the best nice looking good quality 1" stem is a 1 1/8" thomson stem.

late 04-26-11 01:02 PM

get a Nitto Technomics.

i disagree, its the cinelli alter ;p
but i would definitely agree to a 1 1/8th thomson stem being the best nice looking good quality 1 1/8th stem lol (i have two on separate builds. even a different ano color stem body bolt thing on one haha)

and yes yes i know i know getting a shim is most likely one of my very best options, but like i said i just want to see what ALL my options are that arn't shimming...just to see whats out there....and i have gotten some good suggestions i wasnt aware of from this thread so yay! but keep them coming....

btw does anyone remember buzz going around about cinelli reissueing the alter? that was like last year and still no alter :(

btw 2 how much did alters MSRP for when they were in bike shops and stuff?

muckymucky 04-26-11 04:25 PM

^hopefully in 1 1/8!

illdthedj 04-26-11 04:32 PM

actually i think i remember reading they were going to be 1 1/8th. makes sense, most threadless forks are.

BigMike 04-26-11 04:54 PM

I've used a couple different ones made by Velo Orange. They're well made. Clean. And affordable.

Different styles and angles.

Tom

The outside diameter of a 1" threadless steerer is 1". The stem is not a cylinder so does not have a consistent diameter.

adriano 04-27-11 12:38 AM

+1

theyre definitely different. i have the sides of my black one covered in black reflective tape. its a reversible upgrade or downgrade depending on how you feel about being a cinelli billboard. the top down view is always very cool to me!

yummygooey 04-27-11 08:23 AM

Yes, I was definitely talking length.

I also think they're pretty ugly, but cool at the same time.
