Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

Do you only ride single speed?

I like to have two bikes around just incase something breaks I'm looking at getting a cross bike for gravel n' such but I'm not sure if I should go geared or not my bike I have now is a single speed.

I have a FG bike, 2 20 spd geared roadies, a SS MTB, and a 2x9 MTB(that are built and rolling). Different situations call for different bikes...at least that's what I keep telling myself.

Bikes: Bike Count: Rising.

2 fixed gears and a mtb that I'm slowly disassembling and will be selling to make room for fixed gear #3.

The roadie side of me does. I'm so used to fixed that I have "ZOMG I can idle my feet!!!!" moments. A ~90% carbon primary raodie build says you can't look down at me for that.

No. I ride SS, FG, and geared road bikes. Sold my mtn. bike and my city bike to make room in the garage for more fixies and roadies. I've been on several group roadie rides where one guy is on his fixed gear and has no trouble keeping up on the hills or the descents. I've ridden my FG only on group rides that advertised a more leisurely pace. What a wuss I am.

SS and 21 speed hybrid for me. Haven't spent much time on the hybrid lately, but it's there in case I wanna ride dirt...

Nope. Lots of bikes, all geared various ways. Fixed, Single Speed, Fixed Dingle 2-Speed, 1x9, 2x10, 3x9, etc.

Variety is the spice of bikes.

hell no. i ride gears and have more fun on them. though i probably go more miles on a fixed gear... had several 50+ days and 100+ weekends lately fixed and only a handful of geared rides over 30 miles. hope to change that. need to start taking track lessons.

Am I the only one perplexed by this?

I have a FG, roadie, and MTB. Seriously considering another roadie, but I don't ride the one I have enough already.

right now, yes, because my road bike needs a new cassette. I have many times been only able to ride fixed and it sucks, I like my other bike too.

On roads, I ride about an even mix of geared and FG. I can't decide which I like better....it depends on the ride, but this time of year I am usually more often riding my roadie long distances and working as many hills into the ride as possible.

Offroad I am about 75% SS and 25% FG. I don't have a geared MTB because I have never felt it necessary most of the time. However, some of the trails around here are really hard with a SS and torture with a FG. The older I get the more I find myself thinking about gears and suspension. Gears would also make it much easier to ride to the trails, rather than drive.

Nope, I have one single speed, one geared cx bike (my daily commuter) and one geared hybrid (my winter beater). Variety is a good thing.

I only ride single speed...I have a fixed gear road and a Monocog for off roading...slowly working my way up on mileage on both of those, but I haven't ridden for a few years. I did 17 last night on the fixed and wasn't that tired, the bike trail just goes through the hood and it was getting dark.

Seriously though, after i got rid of my hardrock for a monocog, I hated, HATED riding gears...once you have the joy of simply riding and not having to worry about shifting or anything, its just way more fun. And fruitful (so then I sold my geared road bike for a fixed gear). I mean when you blow past someone riding gears on your singlespeed, you look like a total badass. And they kind of just look at you like ...how the hell did he just pass me so fast?

Its the most enjoyable cycling i've ever had after more than 10 years of riding gears, I can happily say I've gotten rid of them and haven't regretted it yet.

man, they are looking at you like 'o i didnt realize this was a race and i wasnt just ending my 40mi commute to work'... not everyone is trying to go fast all the time.
