Girls have such a head start joining almost any sort of subculture. Its a natural advantage because there tends to be so many damn men.

yah I check out bikes all day everyday, love to see a bike that makes me jealous. My g/f rides fixed too so we're always checking them out together when we ride together. We both want new bikes....I gotta let her go first when we can afford it, hers is cool lookin but really, really beat down. She's at work now or I'd post a pic.

i feel stupid for having such an elitist attitude about bikes...but i only check out the fixies, no other bikes can compete with the elegant beauty of a fixed gear. i can't help myself, it's a sickness, maybe i need to start a fixed gear anonymous. ;)

i have the stare in a bad way, probably because my bike just got ripped off. I look at every bike everywhere. I carry my chain everywhere, if i were to see some flop & chops i would be swinging in a second, i am the only person in my town with those kind of bars. i have always had it, this whole looking for someone to kill thing just made it worse. I get stared at a lot nowadays, since my fixies gone i have been riding my tandem. Anyone know of a single or fixed tandem?

I do now! this deserves a different thread!

I though this was one, but he's got it on the wrong side of the hub, needs to flip that thing and ditch the rear brake |
I have definitely developed a habit of checking out the bikes instead of the bikers. And I'm the picky sort: I consider the sight or sound of derailleurs to be a turn-off, and the presence of too many cables is just too much baggage.
|
Just rampant eyehumpery every bare fixie out there. When the chain is fresh and the line is tight is does something to me, but I'm not cheating, just keeping the radar on.
|
for sure, you gotta get that tension just right if its going through a second drive train. I cant beleive ive never thought of doing this before my fixie got stolen.

You guys are crazy to check out fixed over road bikes. I'll turn around all the way for a track bike, but a really nice 60s/70s/80s road bike with nice tight derailleurs (since it's so flat around here anyone who knows runs like 12-21) and that Columbus SL look (the one that I can't quite describe - different from all the Reynolds 531 bikes that tend to get converted - something bridging the gap between nice old beaters and over-teched modern road bikes) will BREAK MY NECK. I'm talking Masi, Guerciotti, Colnago, Zullo, Merckx etc.
Something about downtube shifters and the aura of a clean friction shift really does it for me aesthetically. Track bikes are gorgeous and all, but if Selma Blair were standing over a Cannondale track with track stem/bars, tight chain etc. I'd check her out. If she were standing over a Masi Grand Criterium '77 I'd check out the GC. |
also, another friend is going to be putting out a magazine real soon.. |

well, i've certainly got the itch. in fact, i got busted today! i was at a different studio today, and while waiting for the elevator, i spotted 2 bikes leaning innocently against an adjacent wall. of course, i had to leer, and while drooling, i was shaken from my trance by a "hey, are you looking at my bike?". twas a lovely pink fixie belonging to one of the office ladies - i had to catch the elevator, but managed to mention my affection for track bikes... pretty funny - i'm sure we would have had a 15 minute conversation about it otherwise.
|
And here I was thinking there was something wrong with me for checking out that Biachi cruiser I saw on my way home last night instead of the girl riding it...
I stopped one night to look at a bike because I couldn't figure out what the rear hub was - saw the rider the next night and caught him to talk about it as he locked it in the same place. I guess it was a coaster brake, that's why I didn't recognize the style... |

My s.o. gives me never ending grief about this, esp. if we're walking and I have to stop and check out the ride for like 5 minutes.

Before I rode fixed (but still SS) I would pull up to geared roadies on my daily commute and there would be this exchange of looks like "You p**** I'm gonna school you up this next hill" but instead we would lie and say "nice bike." He/they would start I'd draft then pull, then break away and you could taste the blood in your mouth we were pushing so hard. It seemed like everyday you had to prove yourself for riding a single-speed. I would consider every geared bike an adversary. Is that a triple? What's his crank length? Damn, Record on open pros, he must be good - if I beat him that would be one for the books.
Now that I have my fixed gear I have completely lost all motivation for this. I let geared bikes pass me all the time but when I pull up to the red light they look at my bike with respect and say "If only I had the knees..."(or another lame excuse). And just like driving a new car, I suddenly notice all of these fixed gears I never noticed before. Whenever I see one parked I have to look for at least 2 or 3 minutes - its soo bad. There's some regular fixed gear riders 'round town and I know them all by bike, not name :D |
Please please PLEASE keep us up to date on the book and mag. I have the greatest gf in the world, but I still cannot resist the neck snap toward SS girls. SO HOT!! mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
|
I eye all bikes, but not about desire so much as just being my usual nerdy self, analyzing the bike to see what is different from my bike, etc.
